Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

did quite well, didn't look out of place and already at 4-0, worked his socks off, which is always good to see. Looked comfortable on the ball also when got it. Good start for him

I think he could have done with a whole half of football at the very least, when the clock is running down there's a tendency for younger players trying too hard to get on the ball(and ending up somewhere in between all the time) rather than focusing on playing their position within the team and then letting themselves comfortably take possession as it comes and adapt to making better decisions at a higher level. He hasn't played a lot of professional football from what I've read so he will need a lot more game time before we see that natural ability being put to full use.

Hopefully we'll draw a Championship side or one from League 1 or 2 for the next round so we can see Roberts, Kelechi, etc. get an actual start for the first team. Unfortunately in Patrick's case I think this will be the only competition he can get a start in. Might be able to appear as a sub in the FA Cup or a PL contest against a weaker side.

He'll need to mix his dribbling up a bit more at this level. Cut inside everytime and tried to run across the defence. Other than that, a decent showing.

i agree, but i dont think he was given enough of chance anyway.
Tbh, Pozo's problem was he was neither one thing or the other. He wasn't a striker who would get you 10 goals a season, nor was he somesparklingcreative midfielder who was going to create 10 goals a season. Sure, he could dribble around in midfield and play the occasional pass, but in an era of Silva, Nasri, Sterling, De Bruyne and the other thousand attacking midfielders in the world, he was decidedly average for a team looking to reach the very top of European football.

I she is a good footballer? Of course! But, was he EVER going to be a long term First Team squad player for City? Never.

Now, Patrick Ronerts, Nacho, Evans....these are players that I think Viera wants to see nurtured and brought through carefully, so as to to damage their confidence and to bed into the First Team Squad in a more natural, organic way. Being around the players, getting a game here and there, practicing with the likes of Silva and Yaya, and excelling in the EDS is what brings a player along. Before you know it, they FEEL like they belong and from there, it is only hard work and taking your opportunities that makes or breaks whether you are a long term First Teamer. Don't forget,we are talking about a billion dollar enterprise and there are no "charity cases"allowed. Either a player makes the trade with full grown men or he doesn't. That is not up to Pelle, that is down to the player themselves. When they make that step, it will be obvious to everyone inside the club....as it was for Patrick Roberts at Fulham.

As with all new young talent, when they step up to the big time,it is a matter of how they handle it. Can they relax on the ball? Can they ride a challenge? Can they handle losing the ball and chasing back to win it back from that grown ass man who has been in the league for a decade? These are all things that are EXTERNAL to how well the kid played at the EDS level, but are vitally important to how well a player steps up to the next level....where the game, the mentality and what is at stake are exponentially quicker, sharper and more important.

Can you grasp the mind spinning hypocrisy in that post?

do you just read whatever you want to read ?

He isn't good enough right now, but thats through a range of different reasons, injuries, lack of game time......

when he was first being given a chance the potential was there and i think he played like 2 games games quite well and then he just wasn't played after that and then suffered injuries. You do know players potential can change and players that look good at first can maybe not develop swell after that, especially without game time ?

or is it the 1970s to want youth players to have games so they can develop ?

Shouldn't this thread be in the main forum? He's a first team player.

Anyway, time he got some proper involvement in the first team, he didn't get a look in when things were going well, now he's not really getting a look in now things aren't going so well. And is deliberately not being picked in EDS games, so what are we waiting for?

He was amazing in his u19 game v Juve, impressed me v Sunderland, and beat a couple of players with ease today and won a free kick I think.

Time for him to get 30mins+ when we are struggling not just 8 mins like today or whatever, and in his preferred right position too, as Navas is hardly undroppable at the minute.

its not going to happen with pelle in charge, anywhere else bar us and chelsea and he'd be getting plenty of game time.

He is not a safe option, fucks me off he can't do any worse than navas

or anyone else come to think about it.
Barker couldn't do any worse than Sterling today. At least he can fucking shoot with power.
