Re: Mangala

He's a slightly taller version of Micah. Exactly why was he been penalised for jumping though? If the striker never leaves the ground how can the defender be penalised for jumping and heading the ball clear. Fucking ridiculous if you ask me. It's increasingly obvious that pellegrini doesn't for one moment consider the problems Kolorov causes for the rest of the defence and in particular the left sided centre half. If he want's to rotate Clichy then why not move mangala out there as I'm sure he's athletic enough for it .

He's a winner,a player who wears his heart on his sleeve and who is desperate to succeed. He has every attribute to be top class, all he is missing is the experience, hence the occasional mistake.

We sign a quality left back and I'm convinced our defence will soon be the envy of world football.

Dead on there. You can see his desperation to impress when he is at a new club and aware he's made some mistakes, and some claim it is "naivete" or "he's positionally stupid". The kid will be world class in a few years and once he gets his head on straight, I'm a fan as a defender and his attitude as shown in those interview he has done have made me a believer. I think he's the real deal here and he will have that Kompany-esque struggle for a while then develop over the next few years to become on of the best defenders in the world. He's the future of the club for me.

That's all well and good and I agree. However, that doesn't prevent people from calling a spade a spade as of right now i.e. when he has a bad performance it will be labeled a bad performance.

As much as he is a player for the future, you expect a certain degree of immediate composure for £30m+ as well.

Re: Mangala

The comparisons with Richards are a joke, for starters......Mangala can pass a ball,he has better awareness and is much more mobile,he's also capable of lung busting gallops and recovering in time to take up his duties.

Micah isn't in his league.

Well that bits true.

Agree, I couldn't believe none if our players were onto the ref about it. There was no leadership on the pitch at all and heads were just allowed to drop

Flicking through this thread I saw some posts about how Berahinos movement was something Mangala couldn't handle at west brom. I remember seeing Berahino run off Demichelis twice in behind mangala when we were square, not sure how that was his fault.

Mangala spent a hell of a lot of time in the left back position yesterday, if that doesn't point to the main issue back there I don't know what does

Re: Mangala

This is partly a mea culpa.

I was too harsh on Eli in one of my earlier posts. After reflecting on what has been written since then by posters such as Damo and FI (my post was just after Tolmie's post) I can see the problems that were caused for him by having to cover the left flank when AK was left stranded up the pitch.

I like everyone else wants him to succeed. You can see how hard he is trying, and judging on the interview with him on the official site he is more intelligent and insightful than the average pro.

I think he has an excellent passing range with both feet, and it's inevitable that a young defender from a different league will take time to adapt. One example is the use of hoof ball by opposition teams, and strikers backing into Eli to win a free kick. He will learn over time how to adapt to this tactic.

Upon reflection it looks to me like he is trying too hard and stressing himself out. He just needs to calm down and play a simple game. I also think he looks much better with Clichy beside him.

Re: Mangala

Can't be arsed copying the Burnley match report link from the Indepedent but it's worth noting Ian Herbert has him as a £40 million purchase.

Now why would a football journo qoute that figure?
