Only 23 years old first season in a new league and new team...

His age alone tells you he is no where near his full potential yet given time and patients id say he will become a top class player.
Nastasic showed a hell of a lot more in his first year and he was 19. To compare the two, Nastasic read the game and could actually defend but he lacks pace. Managala is shit off a shovel but cant defend. I would have preferred we stuck by Nasty as he is one who I see as an excellent defender in the making.

We finished 10 points off the rags and crashed out of the Champions League in Nastasic's debut season.
You cant attribute all that on him. Bobby Manc was loosing the team and a lot of players downed tools. Nastasic is nowhere near the finished article but you can see intelligence in his game and that is a very solid foundation for a good defender.

One thing i will say in Mangalas defence, is that you can see he is desperate to do well and I can cut him some slack on that. If he calms down and steadies himself he may prove a good CB but dont think he will reach the level of player we are expecting nor require.

People say the fee doesn't matter but it does. Because when you pay £32m for a CB you are expecting to sign the finished article and he is far from it. But ...... he has had some good games too so you have to consider the reasons.

He certainly looks better when Clichy is beside him, I genuinely feel it would have been impossible for anyone with kolarov beside them at weekend. Plus ..... I genuinely think we've missed garcia this season. That's the garcia from the second half of last year. What he was able to do was read the game fantastically well and covered the CB's to perfection. Their was little need for kompa y and MDM to step into the midfield as he tended to be there. This season fernando has been part of the problem in that he has no pace and doesn't really provide quality cover like NDJ, barry and garcia did.

Fernando has pace but like Mangala this is his debut season and isn't used to playing two games in the space of 48 hours!.

He will justify his price tag.

I genuinely hope you're right. He is young and will hopefully mature in to the player we paid for but I have my doubts. I hope he proves me wrong.

Even the best had trouble initially settling in.

He's not overly young though is he. I fear we're going down the Balotelli route with him. Up until the age of 21 is where you look at potential. After that they are either reaching it or not.

At 23 and looking at the fact his game relies heavily of pace and strength he'll be on the decline in his early 30's. However, I do think he'll have the MDM factor and be top drawer next season. If we can get 4 top seasons from him then recoup some of his fee then its money well spent.

A couple of years younger than Wio when he secured his big money move but had already won more couple of medals and played more game in Europe than Wio.

that is my worry and why I drew comparisons with Nastasic earlier. Nasty isnt fast but had the positional awareness and intelligence that I dont see in Managala.

Re: Mangala

I didn't see much intelligence in Nasta for Chelsea's winner last season either.

I think Nastasic has a much better reading of the game than Mangala and both defenders perfectly summarise the managers style of football who bought them.

Nastasic performs better with a defensive outlook to the team and is exposed in the high line system. Where as Mangala is a front foot defender and performs better high up the pitch.
