Fair dos, blue. I suspected you were being a smart arse after the event but was wrong.

Cheers mate. I remember posting in the Firmino thread that I watch Hoffenheim quite closely if I get the chance, due to being in their end at Dortmund on my stag doo. Firmino stuck out that day and scored so for last season I was watching out for him in particular and he almost always impressed. Ironically if it wasn't for our own KDB he'd have had a great chance of player of the year in the Bundesliga.

Anyway as this thread's about Sterling I'll try to keep it to him from now. I just thought bringing Firmino into the discussion was relevant as they played against each other and it was one I wanted in our side instead of the other but hey ho!

On Sterling, I realise he's only 20 but he's not demonstrated the talent which would lead me to believe he will be any sort of special player be it in 2 years, 5 years or 10 years. I find it absurd that we'd pay 44m for him when we had Barker in our academy waiting for his chance too. If Barker had made the same mistakes Sterling has and had been given the same amount of game time I wouldn't be near as angry because we've not spunked almost 50m on him. My anger lies with the club for what I see as a poor signing, not with the player himself who does try his best in fairness to him.

Youngsters who "explode onto the scene" often have a period of readjustment, when things don't go so smoothly for them. The better players get through this whereas the Mouldens and Johnson's (Michael or Adam, take your pick) disappear. The difference with Sterling is that in the midst of his downturn (he wasn't great for Liverpool at the end of last season imo), City paid £40M+ for him, which has simply put him in the spotlight both in the media and in the minds of blues supporters.

Unfortunately for him, he now has to deal not only with the ups and downs of his form but also the price tag and there are very few young lads who can deal with that easily. This is where the management of his talent (which he undoubtedly has, just not £40m worth) becomes absolutely vital and it is imperative that Pellers and co. look after him properly and the fans cut the lad some slack.

If he was a 20 year old from the youth team, who's scored 6 goals by this stage but was a bit hit and miss, we wouldnt give a toss and whilst you can't dismiss the money we spent on him, it's done now. I simply look at him as what he is, a talented young kid (18 months younger than Harry Kane & 2 years younger than Englan's finest, Jesse Lingard!), who's finding his way in a team of world class players and I hope he makes it, for his and our sake.

He'll be alright fella. He'll start knocking them in regularly with the artillery behind him soon and make them eat their words.

As somebody who has watched Roberts quite regularly, I absolutely guarantee you that he hasn't and he's nowhere close to Sterling as a footballer.

Exactly. It's fucking absurd people actually believe that a youngster who they've seen once is better than a £49m pound star who's going to be one of the best players in the world.

He is though, I'm glad people higher up at the club have sense as some of the morons on here seem to think hes average.
All I will say is there is a reason the opening bid was half what we paid for him. Obviously you naturally start low but 25m is what Txiki really valued him at and I would say that is about right. Fans need to stop deluding themselves that he is going to be world class just because we paid a world class fee for him. I wonder if there wasn't a limit on foreign players if we would have paid such a substantial amount of money for him. In fact we probably wouldn't have even been looking at him in the first place.
