Player topic: Stevan Jovetic (2014/15)

Thought he did well when he came on, was always going forward and trying to force his way through with runs, the complete antithesis of what we saw in the first half.

Agree, thought he looked really up for it after he came on....but by then I think Aguero and Silva had pretty much thrown in the towel.
Always wanted him to come good, maybe he's like Sansom and needs to grow back his Brian May perm as when I remember the best of Jovetic at Fiprentina it's back when he was sporting the perm

Jovetic looked pretty effective playing just behind Aguero in our best run of matches this season, particularly at Sunderland where we played them off the same park where Chelsea had been held scoreless a few days earlier.

With Nasri out, it's a good opportunity for him to play the same role. His movement off the ball is excellent - probably his strongest suit. If he can cut out the over-elaboration and hold the ball a bit better, I can see him forming a pretty effective offensive trio with Aguero and Silva. Certainly one that could cause Chelsea a few problems on the 31st.

He is simply not good enough, i wish i could see something in him that i think he could be, However i really cant see him doing anything.

He gives the ball away far to cheaply, doesnt have a trick in his locker, looks busy with his arms all over the show because he is generally chasing down a ball he has given away. Constantly runs into areas where other players are and gets in the way. Doesnt have good strength on the ball, isnt good in the air.... therefore IMO he is simply not good enough

but some of you lot seem to see something completely different to me... bewildered

ps I watched the game last night i know only a friendly, but he was f*cking dreadful in the 1st half completely anonymous and tried his best to miss the goal !!

You are too rach on him.
I agree with most of your analysis, but i have seen enough of him to know that he is one of our most skilled player when it comes to trickery and dummies with the ball. He just has not enough confidence to take on opponents on a regular basis ( same critic to Nasri and Navas though :-) ).
My main concern about Jovetic is, to my opinion, that he lacks football brains, which is a terrible handicap when you are an AM type of player.

Cannot agree with that at all. Can you elaborate

Yeah, I don't think he lacks football brains. I'm just not sure he's suited to our system.

We rely on retaining the ball, whereas Jovetic is happy to take risks with his lay offs and dummies. Most of his team mates aren't on the same wavelength so we often concede possession, which is why I think Pellegrini doesn't fully trust him.

I thought he did well when he came off the bench on Sunday though - we certainly created more with him on the pitch.

I agree with that.

His style is not appropriate in a game where we are trying to retain possession, be patient and keep things tight. But on the positive side, he does bring something different and he makes things happen. He's good to bring on after say 70 minutes if we are trying to break down a stubborn defence because some of his various flicks and tricks do actually come off, and when they do, he causes havoc amongst our opponents. I think he's a valuable member of the squad.

What i call football brains is :

_ to know when to go for a simple pass instead of the Hollywood-one, to not brake a potential attack build-up
_ to have precise position awareness of your teammates around you
_ to not take chances systematically when you have a teammate in a much better position than you

Far too often, you can predict that an attack build-up or a possession play will brake as soon as the ball reaches-him.

He did do well when he came o. V arsenal, but he keeps on playing 'quite well' without doing a great deal
