There was no central midfield. However we shouldn't paper over the cracks of the defending, which was embarrassing for that first 45 minutes, and Kompany was the one most at fault, he made Sagna look worse than he was because he was covering, and he made Mangala look worse who was covering both VK and AK. That first half was a defensive shambles, and we can't, and shouldn't paper over that, with "well he's tired, he's just had a baby", or "midfield weren't very good".

Believe you me I am not.
After that performance, Vincent should not be playing a week on Monday.

Vinny I assume got the Captaincy because he led by example with his previously strong performances, but unfortunately I find him very quiet on the pitch and not a good communicator. With his dip in form as well we need a talker on the pitch and a strong leader to get hold of the team on the pitch.

What we actually need is a good defensive coach because who ever is doing the defensive work at the minute isn't cutting it.
As much as the notion that vinny was a standout in how bad our defence was I think is a bit harsh as if you watch the 4 goals that we conceded its fair to say all 4 of the defenders were poor, the second god only knows what was going through Mangala's head and the 3rd in which vinny was over near kolarov if you look at the big picture its clear to see he was covering for Mangala who was way out near Sagna.

Too much reliance on 'player ability' and past reputation for me. Its amazing how defensively un-trained we look at times. Do we have a defensive coach? Is it Stevie Wonder?

Kompany didn't look like he progressed from last season. The blip is slowly but surely turning in to a constant loss of form. Denayer didn't put a foot wrong. Kompany made us a better side when in form. Denayer at this moment just keeps our defence more steady. This to me is a big problem.

For me this is Vinny's biggest flaw. He tries to do it all on his own instead of trusting his team mates.

There have been plenty of examples when he has rushed in and gave needless free kicks away when he should have held his position and communicated with his midfield to track the runner.

Again his partnership with Demichellis was average at best in the first half of last season. It wasn't until the Hull game where VK got sent off and then Demi started to lead the defence until it looked good.

Vinny's is world class when on form and is the right man to captain us. However, he needs to go back to basics. Trust your teammates and focus on doing your own job well.

There are no passengers in this team anymore and I'd rather Vinny put 100% into his own game and cut out the mistakes than worry about his partners.
