Seems a long time ago that we had a formidable defense doesn't it?

I think a more pragmatic approach is needed. If Zabba was not a while away from fitness I think he could do a job as a DM - he has done ok in that role before.

For me this is Vinny's biggest flaw. He tries to do it all on his own instead of trusting his team mates.

There have been plenty of examples when he has rushed in and gave needless free kicks away when he should have held his position and communicated with his midfield to track the runner.

Again his partnership with Demichellis was average at best in the first half of last season. It wasn't until the Hull game where VK got sent off and then Demi started to lead the defence until it looked good.

Vinny's is world class when on form and is the right man to captain us. However, he needs to go back to basics. Trust your teammates and focus on doing your own job well.

There are no passengers in this team anymore and I'd rather Vinny put 100% into his own game and cut out the mistakes than worry about his partners.

i dont think vinny can play the high line at everything else he is great but i dont think its going to change and we will lose a great player at the end of the season

As I have said on many Kompany related threads over the last 2 seasons, our penchant to blame everything else but Kompany, anytime he plays poorly has become a mantra on this site. Sadly, fooling oneself wouldn't change much. A poor Kompany is simply that, a poor Kompany.

Sadly, that has become the norm, and his occasional great game the aberration. :( that folks, is simply the God's honest truth. I wish it wasn't.

the only city defender to play well in the last two years is demi and that only because we accept his failings kompany in a more balanced team would go staight back to his best

Nah is it fuck. You writing hundreds of similar posts doesn't make it so, even when you add "gods honest truth"
Let's see how he gets on when it matters and not some preseason friendly.

He has had some serious concentration lapses over the last couple of seasons, at times he's been immense as well, that's the frustrating part we all know he has the ability.

I cant think of another player who has gone from being so good to being so bad in such a short space of time. Kompany was responsible directly or indirectly for all four goals today and his unpredictability is having an adverse knock on effect on the rest of the defense.

Mangala is not a natural footballer, but given a specific job to do and a structure within which to do it he seems adequate. This is why Mangala plays much better alongside the much steadier, more reliable MDM. Alongside Vinnie Mangala has one eye on his own player and one eye on Kompany's next mistake.

I'd love to know what is the cause of our captains decline. Until we do he's too much of a loose cannon to risk at the heart of our defense if we want to win something this season.

Vinny as our captain and leader has been superb for the club , and i have defended him to the hilt , but his performance against stuttgart was diabolical , his defending was non existent , he appears to have lost the basic need to stop the opposition playing , he fails to intercept passes/crosses and frequently mis times challenges , i actually felt sorry for sagna and mangala today , trying to cover for his lapses. Not sure if VK will ever get back to his best , at 29 , he should be at his peak , but he is now becoming a liability , and if the team is picked on form and not reputation , then Denayer should be in the starting line up against the Baggies. This is not meant to be a hatchet job on vinny , he has been a great ambassador and leader for our club , but until he gains any semblance of the form that made him arguably the best centre back in europe a couple of seasons ago , he should be on the bench.
