Players made scapegoats and unfairly treated by fans

Sterling

When he first started doing really well under Pep a lot of fans were in denial for a long time and refused to give him any credit. It took two amazing seasons for some to change their minds.

As soon as his form dropped off they were back to being all over him again. This was despite players like Bernardo being poor for 12 solid months, before his recent return to form, and getting little stick for it.

Goater was another player who got a lot of abuse before he won the fans over. For whatever reason he got miles more stick than Dickov despite him having a miles better record.

Watching Footballs Darkest Secret documentary I was surprised to hear David White saying how he tried to drown out the boos when his name was read out as they ran on the pitch.

Memories fade over the years but I don't remember Whitey being a target for the boo boys even though his form did seem to suffer after that miss in his only England appearance.
I don’t recall that either. As I remember he was one of our most popular players.

From where I sit in the stadium recently it's been Sterling but in the past Kolarov was giving abuse for anything and sometimes Navas.

What game was it where Navas crossed about 40 times in one half? West Ham in 2015 or United in 2016?

My mate is bad with Sterling. I think he expects that he should pull off every single move/shot he makes. He constantly slags him off, no matter what he does. If he does something correct 'he should be doing that anyway'. It is non-stop.

Have to agree with this,I loved David white and honestly can’t remember him being booed he was a fan’s favourite after coming through the ranks ..

We have had a few over the years.

Mahrez
Gundogan
Edghill
Ian Bower

who would you say would make out top ten unfairly treated scapegoats as players and why do we always seem to have one?!

As another poster eloquently put it, a psychological need for some fans.
It is a type of bullying , you are ok , you are not ok.
Sad really. Often it is a bit like rolling a snowball downhill, gathers pace and gets bigger.

And you can guarantee if they were put in a room with said player, they'd absolutely brick it and wouldn't say a thing.
