Players made scapegoats and unfairly treated by fans

I recall Summerbee Jnr going through a phase of abuse from fans as well.

Frustrating player was Nicky Sumerbee, quite a gifted player but just didn't seem to be arsed a lot of the time.
Sumerbee did 'give it back' on occasions from memory, (though that is not condoning fans scapegoating/ abusing their own players)

It's often forgotten because of what he did later but Goater was definitely treated pretty badly in his first season and a half.

After the Gillingham promotion in 99 many blues were unconvinced Goater was up to Championship standard. Really won the crowd over with a lot of goals in 99/00 promotion season and reached a cult status held by very few players, but as FS1 has said it is often overlooked that for a good period in his early blue career he was not popular with sections of the crowd. From zero to hero.

One of the very few times I heard my Grandad swear was when Power came back to City with Everton and scored and he was he was getting loads of abuse. He couldn't believe that such loyal servant was getting so much abuse.

He also didn't celebrate his goal which I think was pretty rare at the time. Think of Franny and 'look at his face'

It’s definitely a type of bullying.
For some it’s a way of taking out their own personal frustrations on someone else.

There are players we’ve had at City that I didn’t rate but I never felt the need to constantly go on about them or go as far as abusing them.

When Sterling was getting loads of stick early on I was thinking ‘he’s 19/20 years old ffs’ - barely even an adult.

Sterling was getting it last night on the England thread by the usual suspects.

Absolutely! I was in the Platt Lane one game and he was wrecked by the Kippax. There’s probably people reading this now who were responsible, they should be proud of themselves.

The moans Gundo and Mahrez gets, usually mostly on here, is in a different league and they probably don’t give a monkey’s.

There has been a bit of a pattern with a fair number of the players who get/got a lot of unfair stick.

Most of them play in wide positions,nearer to the crowd.

Moaning and groaning is understandable sometimes,but booing our own is ridiculous.
