Players made scapegoats and unfairly treated by fans

As another poster eloquently put it, a psychological need for some fans.
It is a type of bullying , you are ok , you are not ok.
Sad really. Often it is a bit like rolling a snowball downhill, gathers pace and gets bigger.

It’s definitely a type of bullying.
For some it’s a way of taking out their own personal frustrations on someone else.

There are players we’ve had at City that I didn’t rate but I never felt the need to constantly go on about them or go as far as abusing them.

When Sterling was getting loads of stick early on I was thinking ‘he’s 19/20 years old ffs’ - barely even an adult.

Richard Edghill got some really shit abuse at a game against Coventry in particular. Reading his autobiography he doesn't seem to hold any grudges against City fans, though he does seem to accept it was only a minority.
Paul Power (or 'Gladys' as he was known) was similair, got a lot of stick, not the most glamorous or gifted player ever but like Edghill always gave 100%.
Kevin Bond was unpopular, seen as 'Daddys boy' as his dad John did sign him and was seen as a replacement for crowd favourite Nicky Reid. To be fair Kevin Bond did okay in the end (didn't he even win City POTY one season?).
Sammy McIlroy wasn't popular was he! This wasn't really being scapegoated like the above and probably had a lot to do with his past 'associations'.Also, at Stoke one year in a bit of a 'relegation six pointer' he scored the winning goal for them, 'milked it big time' in front of the away section and nearly caused a riot!!
Moving to North Lancashire some years back have always struggled to have too much empathy with my local team Morecambe as McIlroy was their manager when at he time (mind you their choice of playing kit certainly doesn't help either). Prefer my other local team Lancaster City tbh (as they are called City and play in blue!)

Watching Footballs Darkest Secret documentary I was surprised to hear David White saying how he tried to drown out the boos when his name was read out as they ran on the pitch.

Memories fade over the years but I don't remember Whitey being a target for the boo boys even though his form did seem to suffer after that miss in his only England appearance.
Yeah, saw that.

I don't particularly remember any booing specifically aimed a Whitey, but he thought there was, and it clearly had an impact on him.
