Players made scapegoats and unfairly treated by fans

I was always at a loss to understand why so many City fans hated Paul Power.
Power may not have been the greatest player ever to pull on our shirt, but he was far from rubbish and he worked his guts out. It used to baffle me.

I think City fans need at least one player to hate. Are all fan bases like this? I started watching us in 64/65 and ever since there has always been at least one player the fans have despised. Currently, it's probably Mendy, but not long ago it was Cancelo and Gundogan.

Seem to recall Heath even getting booed on on his debut which is quite an achievement. He was one of many ex Everton players signed by Kendall and part of their successful mid 80s team where he had clearly been decent. Wasnt that old when he came to us but a shocking scoring record while the popular Clive Allen was on the bench was never going to win the crowd over.
Adrian Heath playing for Everton vs City league cup QFs at Goodison 88 didnt help us cause with me. Goading the city fans like fuck that night the little shit

Yes. All fanbases are like this

Many over many years... Ian Bowyer took so much flak it was unbelievable, and how Richard Edghill didn't just walk off the pitch when he was being abused in some games, I'll never know. The worst in recent years in my opinion was the abuse dished out to Aleks Kolarov.

At the end of the day, we have to accept that we have all had a moan or three about certain players over the years, it happens at every club. All it goes to show is that probably 99.99% of us fail to think before we speak/shout when we're caught up in the passion of the game.

The treatment that the likes of Kolarov or Gundogan have received is nothing compared to the 90s. We had quite a few boo boys but Alan Kernaghan probably had it worse than any player I can recall. His name would be greeted by chorus of boos whenever he was selected and joining City probably destroyed his career.

Summerbee used to get loads of stick but had actually started to win over the crowd by the time he was sold. It's a strange one as he was very popular at Swindon, Sunderland and Leicester.

Kit Symons's treatment was bad and in those days playing at smaller grounds with the team doing so badly it became very personal.

Marhez, Rodri and Gundogan up until very recently, Zabba, Silva, Goater in their first season. Lessons to be learned but it will still happen to at least one player.

I had a soft spot for Vassell because of his work rate and electric pace.

His finishing was poor (to put it mildly) but he was one of the players I took to in a distinctly mediocre era.
