I'd still go to Bayern for Palhina. Especially now with Viana coming in.
If we take into consideration that it is going to be a pain in the arse getting players in january, and have to identify slightly out of sorts players, or players from lesser leagues, my january window looks something like this:
- Jão Palhina: been benched for Pavlovich at Bayern but is a physical, playing centre midfielder capable of very high performance levels in the PL, and has great leadership and mentality. Will suit Rodri in a double pivot when he is back
- Ruben Neves/Douglas Luiz (loan): Not sure any of them are good enough long term, but it is about time we utilised the loan market, and no better time to do it than when we are in need to savagen our season before we can provide major surgery to our midfield. Both both would make our midfield a lot more competetive instantly with their PL experience
- Gabriel Veiga : A young talented player we were linked with before he surprisingly went to Saudi. Dynamic runner with a eye for a goal and final pass, good technique. Might be time for him to leave Saudi and make a name for himself back in the european game. One that can feasibly end up a good player for us long-term but also be what we need short-term
- Ousmane Diomande: young, fast and athletic supremely talented cb capable to play on the right hand side. Another one with links to Viana. One that will probably look to leave Sporting in the near future
4 players in positions we desperately need. 2 of them young, talented athletic players that strenghtens our squad and first-eleven, while getting the rebuild of to a healthy start. Palhina to provide some steel, consistency and ability to go on as one of the senior leaders in midfield alongside a returning Rodri in the future. Luiz/Neves to give us something we need until the summer, when we can plan for the return of Rodri by signing someone younger to take Gundogan's spot.
With these winter transfers in mind my summer would look something like this:
- Young dynamic CM, in the mold of Ricci or Lamine Camara (who I was made aware of very recently, but looks very talented)
- Winger approaching his prime, prefferably left-side but capable playing both sides. Anthony Gordon in my opinion is the obvious candidate if we can catch Newcastle while they are in need of selling still. But someone of his profile
- Young centre attacking midfielder we expect can go on to provide good attacking output for us. Musiala obviously the dream, but either Xavi Simons or Kudus fit what we need and is more realistic targets
- Dynamic full-back with energy. Kerkez at Bournemoth please. Frimpong another option
- Striker: Understudy to Haaland. Imo, in this position the age or quality is less important for now while we prioritise other positions. Finding the right personality and mentality to be put into the group while also being good enough to step in when needed. Boniface from Leverkusen is a brilliant option if the funds are there, Liam Delap could be a shrewd one
Goalkeeper situation depends entirely on outgoings for now
9 signings, 8 of them permanent over two windows I think will go a long way towards fixing this squad.
If we expect Walker, Gundo, KdB, one of Stones/Ake and Bernardo out the door, while also trying to find moves for Phillips and Nunes it would leave the squad something like this:
Keepers:
Ederson/MYSTERY GK, Ortega, Carson
Defenders: Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol, DIOMANDE, Stones/Ake, Doyle, Pusey, KERKEZ, Lewis
Midfielders:
Rodri, PALHINHA, RICCI, Kovacic, Grealish, KUDUS, VEIGA, Foden, O'Reilly
Wingers: Savio, Doku, Bobb, GORDON
Strikers: Haaland, BONIFACE/DELAP
If I were sporting director ;)
