Point gained or two dropped?

Whoa, earlier on in the season, maybe, but we are now into effectively a 4 game season, which means a point aint good enough at this stage, its called basic mathematics.

Basic mathematics would tell you that it is a point gained. Instead of having to win all 3 games, we can now probably afford to draw against either Villa or West Ham.

No points tonight and we would have had to have won our last three games.

One point tonight and we still have to win our last three games.

After Spurs' defeat I would have hoped that we would notice this. Yes, I know we can get seven points and finish level on points difference but they have got Bolton and Burnley whilst we have Villa and West Ham. IF we finish level, it is almost certain that they will have the better goal difference.

That is why we should have gone for it tonight. 0 to 1 meant nothing, 1 to 3 meant us being favourites and being able to afford the draw against Spurs.

I can see us coming to regret our negative tactics tonight. If we don't win the last three games we may well point to today as the moment we blew it.

Incorrect, our season is still effectively solely dependent on beating Tottenham, whereas a win today on the free ball with attacking flair and goal difference would have meant a draw would suffice .

you lot know that Barcelona only managed a draw at the Emirates only a few weeks ago, correct? What's the difference if it's 2-2 or 0-0

Irrelevant in the context of todays game.

Wigan scored 3 times in 10 mins against Arsenal when they needed to, equally irrelevant.

it's not 'incorrect' lucas.....one more time.

if we beat spurs, get a draw and a win in the other two, without this point it would have been been curtains. now it'd come down to goal difference. if goal difference is tied then it comes down to goals scored, and we are 6 ahead on that.

our goal difference is one better than spurs.

if we beat them by one goal the gap suddenly becomes three. by two and it becomes five.

and we'd get at least one more on our goal difference tally from whichever game we won.

plus just matching our goal difference won't be good enough as it comes down to goals scored, and we're six ahead on that.

so if we draw against villa, beat spurs and west ham by just one goal, spurs'd have to win their games by five clear goals. (1 to match lead we already have, 1 to overcome it, 1 for the margin of our victory against west ham, 1 for the goal we scored against them, 1 for them conceding that goal). it's perfectly possible, but most games are won by the odd goal.

beat spurs by one and west ham or villa by two and spurs need a margin of six goals from their wins.

if we beat spurs by two goals, it becomes silly money, they'd have to make up seven goals even if we only beat wh/villa by one.

and if spurs draw one of their other two matches, we win both of ours, then a draw against spurs is now 100% good enough. last night it would have come down to goal difference, and because we wouldn't get the double-your-money effect by beating them, it would have probably just about have favoured them.

Two points dropped for me but settle for the draw. I do think that we
were dire today though. Ball retention (especially first half)
was rubbish and when we were in a position to attack we
never looked like we wanted to. Adam Johnson was poor and
quite often slowed down or stopped good attacking chances.
Too many mediocre performances from a team that didn't look
as though it even wanted fourth never mind had a chance to
actually get there. Overall disappointed with the negativety.
I know there are posts saying stuff like "always happy with a point
away" or "great point against a top three team" etc. I agree to a
certain extent but can't help feeling that that is the old mentality.
We are on a par with those teams now, the old mentality of being
happy with a draw should be in the past.

A win today meant we could take the draw against Tottenham, now we have drawn we must beat them .

Personally, l can handle this as the team that deserves 4th place will get it, the table doesn't lie .
