My recollection of Pointon’s challange was completely different. I always thought he chopped Giggs down with waist high tackle when the Giggs was running with ball from the half way line.

Met Neil at a charity game at Mossley many years after and told him how much I enjoyed his retribution on Giggs , he replied with , me too . Top fella too .

I was in the paddock amongst the rags, it happened right in front of me and there was a big 'handbags' scene whilst the family man was down. As Pointon marched off, giggs jumped up, winked at the scum fans and appeared completely unscathed.

He was a quality defender and fast as fuck, forwards rarely got past him, he'd often take the ball off them and then turn and race forwards rather than pass back to the keeper, one of the best centre halves we've had in my time.. imo.

For England he got booked in the first half and nearly sent off for a later tackle, I remember Pearce running over having a rant at the player for diving and diverting attention from Curle.. I think he was subbed then. He had a poor game due to the fact he was played out of position at right back.

Wasn't he a victim of Ball 'clearing the drains' of high earners..? the high earners that happenened to be our best players... daft twat..
