Political relations between UK-EU

An article giving an overview and a history lesson of where we are now. TL:DR

‘Hence, the UK now finds itself in a trade relationship with the EU on terms that are far less favourable than those enjoyed by EU members or other EU neighbours like Norway or Switzerland, which enjoy duty- and quota-free access to the EU market for goods, and full or significant access to the EU single market for goods, services, capital and labour.

The (second) irony is that the decision runs completely counter to the UK’s efforts during the past 60 years to avoid being economically disadvantaged in Europe, starting with its decision to create EFTA in 1960
.‘

Yeah - we get it

If the only topic to be considered was trade - then being part of a very large trading bloc is to be welcomed

I can see the UK acting to join other trading blocs

But........

Trade is not the only issue - and so thank fuck we are out.

TBF to Bob and others on here - they manage to largely ensure that the discussion does get beyond ease of trade - but FFS what a one-trick pony

I can afford to smile and other Leavers have (again) voted with their feet - the echo chamber seems to be nearly regained again.

Also - if you search the other thread(s) for the words - Leavers have more reason to be pissed off with the government than Remainers - you will find plenty of 'hits'
Got 4 hits.

Although I agree I've seen words to that effect countless times - all from one poster, and clearly to hedge his bets in case it went tits up. Which it is doing.

No, it isn’t just about trade, it’s also geopolitical, influencing Europe in the direction you want it to go as Thatcher and Cockfield did with the Single Market and expansion into Eastern Europe.

Our exclusion from the heart of Europe came with the establishment of the Euro, a development which was similar to the establishment of the original common market. We declined the opportunity to get involved in the beginning, then joined when it was clear we were being left behind.

The Euro was another major development which again we shunned on similar grounds, ‘we didn’t need it, it won’t work’. Now we are left on the sidelines, while trade and influence reconfigures around us. Dublin has more influence in Europe than we do, doubly so when you consider the next US administration.

To all those saying this isn't a disaster scroll down and read the " Latest Updates" - keep going until you hit a good news story - Meanwhile Lord Snooty impressionist JRM thinks its ok because fish now self identify as British and Useless Eustace says its teething problems - turning his back on his insistence of the importance of fishing.

Just a story that came up on my Twitter feed which just goes to show the sort of people I follow I suppose but which I didn’t go trawling for and in no way is entirely representative of the whole of Brexit which on the whole most of us haven’t noticed any difference to our daily lives. This will all be sorted soon I’m sure...
