Political relations between UK-EU

The EU has activated Article 16 of the withdrawal treaty to prevent vaccines entering Northern Ireland, in effect imposing a hard border. It will be interesting to see where this ends as it is an extremely hostile act in a very sensitive region. THE DUP are up in arms and the UK government is considering its response.

this act contradicts pretty much everything they’ve said about Ireland. Ie we don’t want a hard border/ we need to keep the piece. It could actual result in violence.
So much for caring about the Republic of Ireland.

also restricting access to vaccines could mean lots of people die. What are the eu playing at. Hopefully remainers and leavers are United against this behaviour

Exactly. Not bad going less than a calendar month after the end of the transition period. All the wailing about the government legislation to render it meaningless shows how full of shit the EU really is.

I agree, but AZ aren’t an elected representative body in charge of governing large swathes of Europe, they’re a private company that we can choose to use their services or not, so my anger isn’t directed at them, whereas the EU threatening my state out of, what seems to be emotion (I didn’t agree with the AZ CEO saying this but there is some truth), makes me annoyed and it’s seemingly pissing off those on the island of Ireland too.

And I get that. They’re a big trading bloc, they throw their weight like any other big trading bloc and can be cunts with it.

They won’t block exports even with this move though. Pfizer are delivering to all equally (or short falling all equally) and the AZ vaccine is being made here for our consumption anyway (as per the last 50 pages!).

It doesn't stop the UK sending vaccine supplies to NI but what it does do is impose an effective hard border and it immediately infuriates half of the population there. It doesn't take much to trigger off violence there as die hards on both sides are itching to get it going again.

This is going to get VERY ugly.

Are you suggesting the EU is spiteful and unprofessional and would enact revenge on AZ under the pretence of regulation? Glad we’re not part of that sort of club anymore!!

I don’t think it was 300m by end of Jan mate but I know the point you’re making. I’m sure AZ would love nothing more than delivering the doses to schedule to all their customers.

Well, yes. AZ will pay for this in some way shape or form, unless they can come up with the vaccines sharpish.

The EU just invoked Article 16 of the NI protocols on us without bothering with the niceties of a formal letter to the JC Committee or the one months notice they are obliged to give. Gove is apparently writing a letter of concern. You reckon they will be any nicer to AZ if this isn’t resolved quickly?
