Political relations between UK-EU

Since June 2019, a spat between the EU and Switzerland has meant that the bloc’s exchanges have been banned from Swiss shares.

But with the UK no longer a member of the EU, Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has again approved UK trading venues.

Prior to the ban, London exchanges handled more than a quarter of Swiss shares every day – some €1.2bn, according to the CBOE.

Really? Comparing one against one where there is potentially one against many is a fallacy

Obviously. Without quantifying value or worth it‘s meaningless.

Before me right now I have a Montblanc pen and two cheap biros. Do I discard the one in favour of the other two? Do I explore keeping the Montblanc and having the other two as well? Is two better than one in this case?

In this scenario, EU countries have the Montblanc and a cheap biro. We chucked the Montblanc away, kept one cheap biro and put in an offer for the other one.

That's good news. It will go a small way to replace the average €6-7bn daily trading in Euro denominated shares that moved away from London on 1 Jan.

That isn’t the actual treaty but an interpretation of it.

The actual treaty states the “aim of the Community, by establishing a Common Market and progressively approximating the economic policies of Member States, to promote throughout the Community a harmonious development of economic activities and balance expansion, an increased stability, an accelerated raising of living and closer relations between its Member States”

Tell me is that a complete picture of what the EU has become? Or has it perhaps added to those aims somewhat? Well I know the answer because it required the Maastricht Treaty to become what it is today (and yes one the UK government of the time signed up to)
Ever closer union is in the opening paragraph of the treaty itself. Then it was "between the European peoples" (since adapted to include between the member states) but it's not an interpretation. Whether it meant leading to a political union is debatable, but it has always been in the treaties we signed..

You are too locked in your own reality to have time for anything else

For me - this post just confirms that you really over ever understood matters during 2017-2019 at a superficial level
Just say you were talking cobblers. Everyone knows when you avoid challenges. You're the Mahrez of the thread.

You really have no idea the shit storm that's going on right now do you. I envy you a bit.
Local political word is that the May local elections will go ahead. Tories have been harvesting postal votes, but more importantly we know local traders (especially any with international trade) are facing real difficulties but say it won't feed into prices and supply until the summer.

I think there's two entirely plausible scenarios at play. One, we didn't bother to read the detail of the deal, or two, we did and just hoped it would never come up. Whichever it is, and I'm guessing the first, the shambles last week means the govt has an opportunity to try and blame it on the EU now and will milk it for all it's worth
Or - the more likely scenario......

......after 3 years of a Remainer led UK government acquiescing to all EU demands to be placed in the WA and PD - in late 2019, the first opportunity for a pro-Brexit UK government to make a decision came around.

They had to make a judgement based on what was left behind by the utterly ruinous negotiations undertaken previously by the slavishly subservient Remainer government, with the options being....

1. Sign the existing WA and commit to implementing the PD

2. Scrap the currently available deal and start negotiations afresh - resulting in losing many months - probably years of the 5 years available to make an impact before the next GE

3. Act to take out the most ruinous element of the WA - the unfettered backstop - get the UK the fuck out and then jettison the pathetic PD. Use the period of the transition to face down the EU in a number of other areas bu avoid at all costs any further extensions

There is a lot that the UK electorate must hold the Remainer led government of 2016-2019 accountable for - like they did in December 2019
