Really struck by how the UK Govt is obliged to write to the EU to seek temporary relief on arrangements for internal UK trade, arrangements that the UK Govt negotiated and agreed to just over a month ago.

Even more struck by how the UK ignores this reality and pretends it is perfectly normal.

It is not normal for a country to have a trade bloc to which it does not belong to have competence over your internal trade.

I think there's two entirely plausible scenarios at play. One, we didn't bother to read the detail of the deal, or two, we did and just hoped it would never come up. Whichever it is, and I'm guessing the first, the shambles last week means the govt has an opportunity to try and blame it on the EU now and will milk it for all it's worth

Unbelievable low punch from the french health minister saying the uk is talking risks with our vaccination programme, presumably only to detract from their really poor attempt at their own vaccination programe. Different flag same politcian stance always first to the lifeboats while blaming others.

What did they say? As saying we’re taking risks is right, they were the right risks to take though.

We simply panicked and signed an old dusty deal the eu found in the bottom of drawer, because time ran out and we realised there was no viable walk away option.
Now we’ve realised its’s a pretty shit deal, the hurdle of a border within the UK is the first that needs sorting. We don’t know how so have to ask for permission not to implement it.
This will closely be followed by having to work out deals on services, and a new deal for exporting fish.
It’s the start of a long process. The easiest option to start to solve things in my opinion would be to ask if the whole UK could please have the same deal that they have let Northern Ireland have.
My guess is some in the government, maybe even Boris, realise this and it’s why they didn’t go to town over last weeks vaccine shambles unlike some posters and newspapers.

Literally the first paragraph of the Treaty of Rome of 1958

Once again the UK Tories renege on an agreement that they were signed up to and fully aware of.

That isn’t the actual treaty but an interpretation of it.

The actual treaty states the “aim of the Community, by establishing a Common Market and progressively approximating the economic policies of Member States, to promote throughout the Community a harmonious development of economic activities and balance expansion, an increased stability, an accelerated raising of living and closer relations between its Member States”

Tell me is that a complete picture of what the EU has become? Or has it perhaps added to those aims somewhat? Well I know the answer because it required the Maastricht Treaty to become what it is today (and yes one the UK government of the time signed up to)

It is not a question of comparing 2 blocs and deciding between them - that is just the narrative/discussion that you want to make it

Thankfully, the UK is out of the EU and away from the risk of future integration that Remaining would have inevitably led to

Now we are we are able to consider which trading relationships we wish to enter into

In Johnson’s case it’s scenario one, everyone else it’s scenario two :)

The EU dropped a huge bollock, got twatted around the head by Dublin and it was reversed the same evening.

The UK Govt can alleviate some of the trade issues, it just requires alignment with EU procedures, so as ever it’s a choice. If we want smoother internal trade then we can have it, but it’s as much down to us as anyone else. At some point we have to take responsibility for the consequences of our own decisions.
