Can't comment on the rail as I don't know enough about it.

The idea was that rail franchises are running out so just transfer the lines to Government control. If they make money then great. If they don't then now we have a major potential asset to play with.

We already pay for upkeep and improvement on the infrastructure. Labour wanted to cap peak fares and introduce free WiFi on all long hauls. If it gets people to work less stressed then it's a productivity rise too.

Seems win win to me. It works, we make money. It fails we sell it having upgraded minimums and we make money or we franchise it out again to make money. Good idea for all concerned.

So. Has that fucking loon Diane Abbott surfaced?

There have been no cuts as such. There has been a limit on spend year on year to control an out of control defecit. The public sector got too bloated under the last labour government. I would love a good opposition. Corbyn does not provide that- he couldn't even win when handing out money like a drunken lottery winner.

I am not so sure, I think he has done well. There needs to be a serious debate about public sector. Bloated under labour , yes I agree, but the roads are full of potholes, the NHS is stretched, police numbers and police stations cut, people who clearly have mental issues sleeping rough on streets.

Why do I feel like everything is on a shoestring all the time?

I wish everyone would pay 10 , 20 quid one off in the country to sort some of this shit out, it needs sorting . We cannot just keep cutting back. I was in Spain last week and the roads were smooth , clear and the roundabouts landscaped and full of flowers. All looked lovely - compare to the uk.

I'm quickly becoming fed up of hearing people say the country voted against 'hard brexit' NO that is not true. A lot of morons voted for the hand outs that Corbyn was promising like free tuitions. Theresa May received the most votes in UK history i believe. I hope we can get a great deal from the EU however I agree that a hard Brexit should be an option or else we will just get screwed over by the EU. You can't go into negotiations saying you wouldn't work away in the event that the other party offers you a bad deal... WAKE UP.
Leave it, you're wasting your time.

Yeah you are. Unless you like having 2 libraries instead of 10 per authority ran by volunteers instead of staff, social workers with stupid high case loads, no frontline services for young people to help them with sexual health etc you are chatting absolute bollocks.

No you are - you actually are - in 1999 we spent 5 percent of our GDV on health care - by 2007 it was 9 percent. The last labour government ran up a defecit during a period of economic growth. Please explain to me how this is possible if I am talking bollox?

So we increased spending how is that an overspend? I bet you have never even had chlamydia you toff.

And don't get me started on the NHS fund argument. Stop foreign nationals using it when they are not entitled to it, essentially stop providing health care to all of Europe for free.

In 1999 the public sector spend was 38.8 percent of GDV - it was 50 percent by the end of the labour government - the highest percentage since the 1980s. Do you think there was no link to our defecit? Was it a good idea to increase a defecit during a period of economic growth?

This information is the opening chapter of the institute for fiscal studies analysis of the public sector in 2010. Please tell me again - how am I chatting shit as you state??

Toff? I was born to a single mum in a council house on burnage lane?

Your point about chlamydia is just nonsense - and no I have never had it.

Other than that - great post.

This is the elephant in the room as to why it is under so much strain. Can't say it due to political correctness.

I just think we should be in charge of our own basic necessities like water.

Well yes, in a perfect world that would be nice. But we have a trillion pounds worth of national debt as we had to buy a bank a few years ago to keep the country afloat.

I very much agree with the all spending is an investment mantra, but the potential spend at nationalizing this and then losing its profitability means that I don't see how the social investments pay off. We don't really have a problem with quality, it's cost that many seemed concerned about.

I think the money for this could be better spent by implementing additional benefits to those in poverty to help foot the bill. Not necessarily by a direct payment but perhaps a reduction for fortnightly payers who are in receipt of Universal Credit.

It would be much cheaper. On the other hand, give OfWat tougher regulatory powers.

Either way if I do a cost benefit analysis on this including social benefits I don't get near the up to £70bn it would take to buy it. That's a lot.

To give you an idea, if we gave the UK Space Agency 70bn we would be on Mars in about ten years. It's a "let's have our own Space Agency" type of big.
