Post Something Interesting

I’m sticking this in here because in this fine weather with clear skies I was really amazed by the twinkling of Sirius, which is low in the south western sky at the moment.
You’ll find it between the moon and Jupiter.

The changing of colours in it were spectacular tonight. Even the missus was amazed. Burst of blue and red. Fabulous night sky tonight.

Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, appears to shimmer or twinkle due to atmospheric turbulence, as its light passes through our atmosphere, which bends and distorts the light, causing it to flicker and change color.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Atmospheric Turbulence:
Earth's atmosphere is constantly moving and has variations in temperature and density.
  • Light Refraction:
As light from Sirius travels through these turbulent air layers, it is refracted (bent) in different directions, causing the light to appear to shimmer or twinkle.
  • Scintillation:
This bending and distortion of light is known as atmospheric scintillation, which is the scientific term for the twinkling of stars.
  • Brightness and Visibility:
Sirius is particularly known for its shimmering effect because it is a very bright star, making the atmospheric effects more noticeable.
  • Low on the Horizon:
The shimmering effect is also more noticeable when Sirius is low on the horizon, as the light has to pass through a greater amount of atmosphere.
  • Color Changes:
The scintillation can also cause the star to appear to change color, as different wavelengths of light are refracted differently.

The lyric's to Simon and Garfunkel's "America"

"Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag"
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And walked off to look for America
"Kathy", I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America
Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful, his bowtie is really a camera"
"Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
"Kathy, I'm lost", I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America

But it’s not English. “Incomprehensilbleness” ? Incomprehensibility surely.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary...

The earliest known use of the noun incomprehensibleness is in the early 1600s.

OED's earliest evidence for incomprehensibleness is from 1611, in the writing of Randle Cotgrave, lexicographer.

Edith Thompson was executed in Holloway Prison, London in 1923. Thompson was executed by long drop hanging (quick neck break). Unfortunately for Thompson, the hanging may have been botched, as it appears she strangled slowly to death on the rope.

In her death throes, as well as voiding her bowels and bladder, she bled profusely out her vagina because of internal haemorrhaging (not uncommon for women who get short drop or strangulation hangings).

Because of the mess in Thompson's hanging, after 1923 condemned women in UK or UK administered hangings were required to wear thick canvas underwear on the day of their execution to catch any blood or excrement.

Men did not wear special underwear - just women.

Demodex folliculorum is a mite and, like spiders and scorpions, it is part of the arachnid family; the difference, however, is that this small animal, which reaches half a millimeter, does not live in the undergrowth but on the skin of our body.

In particular, demodex loves to hide in the company of its peers inside the hair follicles where it spends its days filling its belly with dead cells and sebaceous substances produced by the glands of our face; the oilier the skin, the richer the menu.

At night, however, it leaves the follicles to roam freely on the face.

The bond between man and this mite is ancestral, and it seems that the original colonisation dates back to the times when our ancestors domesticated the first dogs.

Today, it is known that at birth our epithelium is covered with these cute beings that never abandon us.

Demodex do not have an anus and therefore expel waste substances only at the end of their life.

Don't forget to wash your face tonight, and sleep well...
