Welcome to the wonderful world of Hakarl... Icelandic fermented shark.

Imagine there is a type of shark your father caught. Now imagine your sibling ate it and died.

Now imagine that you decided not to avoid the shark and instead buried the toxic shark meat in a small hole in the ground and threw stones on top of the entire thing.

Now imagine that you let it fester for 6–12 weeks in a pool of ammonia and uric acid before hanging it out in the open for a few months, not forgetting to cut it into little cubes.

You’re now able to eat Hakari without dying, although the taste may well make you retch for some time.

As disgusting as it sounds, can you imagine how much trial and error had to happen in order to make this product edible?

Eat the shark at first, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in the open for a week, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for a week, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks without stones, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks with stones but don’t hang it up, you’re dead!

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks with stones and hang it up, eat it...congratulations... you are alive!

Now prepare it again, following exactly the same process.

Can you imagine how many people died when trying to make Hakarl before this process was perfected?

Jonathan Swift — 'He was a bold man that first ate an oyster.'

A 97-year-old Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise, named Mommy, at the Philadelphia Zoo, has become the oldest recorded first-time mother of her species. She recently gave birth to four baby hatchlings, all female. The four hatchlings are part of a larger clutch of 16 eggs laid in November 2024, and the zoo is continuing to monitor the remaining eggs

The daddy tortoise is in his 90's as well.

The zoo keepers stored the eggs at different temperatures as they hope to get both male and female baby tortoises

Many of us will be familiar with lobscouse, the stew favoured by sailors in Northern Europe in the 18 th and 19th centuries. It consisted of salted or left over meat, potatoes and maybe carrots and onions.
What may be less well known is that sometimes the meat was ship’s rats or the ship’s cat.

To commemorate her 79th birthday, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.

One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'. Here are the lyrics she used:

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,

Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,

Bundles of magazines tied up in string,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,

Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,

Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,

These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,

When the knees go bad,

I simply remember my favorite things,

And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,

No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,

Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',

Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',

And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,

When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,

When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I've had,

And then I don't feel so bad.

It would never catch on in the uk
You'd need some sort of city where they'd happily dip into bins for dead rats, dead cats something to eat, etc. we dont have any cities like that do we? Do we lah?

The first Mexican actor to win an Oscar was from Chihuahua.

Manuel was the son of a revolutionary who fought alongside Pancho Villa and lived his early years between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez.

He had a very deprived childhood and lost his father when he was only 10 years old.

Little Manuel worked as a labourer, messenger, and dishwasher in California.

But he had a dream that seemed impossible for a young man of Mexican descent in the 1930s: to be an actor in Hollywood.

Despite all odds, he became the first Mexican actor to win not just one, but two Oscars as 'best supporting actor' in 1952 and 1956.

He was also nominated for best actor twice, in 1958 and 1964.

There's a great Jazz version of that by John Coltrane.

A very good actor, Mr. Quinn. I did not know his background.

There being no laundry facilities on the International Space Station (ISS), the astronauts' clothes are worn until the astronaut (and their colleagues) can’t take it anymore. At that point, their dirty clothes are put into a bag, loaded into a departing cargo vessel, and incinerated in the atmosphere.

The NASA clothing allocation nominally provides each ISS astronaut with:

1 pair of shoes for the treadmill

1 pair of shoes for the bike

1 pair of exercise shorts for every 3 days of exercise

1 T-shirt for every 3 days of exercise

1 work shirt for every 10 days

1 T-shirt for under the work shirt for every 10 days

1 pair work pants/shorts for every 10 days

1 pair underwear for every 2 days

1 pair socks for every 2 days

Restaurant in Las Vegas. They offer what they call the “quadruple bypass burger” with 9,982 calories.

It is made up of four half-pound beef patties, eight slices of ‘Murican cheese, twenty strips of bacon a whole tomato and half an onion. The bun is coated with lard.

If you are over 350 lbs (160 kg) be sure to weigh in with the waitress in the nurse outfit when you get there. You qualify to eat for free (Diet Coke not included).
And if you don’t finish your plate, she’ll give you a public spanking…

Big Bird almost joined NASA's Challenger mission "to encourage kids to get interested in space."

The plan was for sequences were to be filmed with Big Bird (Carol Spinney) but the task of sending the puppet suit proved too complicated, and the educator slot was filled by Christa McAuliffe.

Had the plan been followed through, millions of kids would have watched Big Bird and the spacecraft explode live on TV.
