Pre season games compared to other clubs

Seems an even more relevant thread and valid question to ask now Phil, Stones and Gundo will miss the first of only two pre season games. Even if you count the charity shield as pre season game it still seems a little light, but in Pep we trust I suppose

They’ll lose out on the training, but I’m sure they’ll feature in the U23 friendlies to gain sharpness.

Three i remember.

1-1 draw for the opening of the cheadle stand, niall quinn scored.

Lost 4-1 the other game. Weah scored for us. I got Nicky Weavers autograph after travelling down from a family holiday in scotland at like 6 am to see us play like that.

The other was a 2-2, we scored a late penalty to equalise.
i was at the 2-2 and the 1-4. May be wrong but think we won 1-0 when Quinn scored, I wasn’t there, was working in Wythenshawe that day.

It's a trade off, give the players a longer rest but come into the season under-cooked. I feel it's affected us more in recent seasons.

First 5 games:
5 points dropped in 2021/22 (L to Spurs, D to Southampton)
7 points dropped in 2020/21 (L to Leicester, D to Leeds, D to West Ham)
5 points dropped in 2019/20 (D to Spurs, L to Norwich)
2 points dropped in 2018/19 (D to Wolves)
2 points dropped in 2017/18 (D to Everton)
0 points dropped in 2016/17

I'd be a little worried we go into West Ham (A) under-cooked.
I actually quite like the fact we aren’t playing many pre-season slogs but these are interesting stats I think.

Anyone else concerned about our pre season schedule?
We have 3 games booked - two in the US (Green Bay and Houston) and the Community Shield v Liverpool.

Looking at this list here of other club's schedules, most have 5 and Liverpool and the rags have 6.
I'm hoping at least 2 more will be fitted along the way this month.
Our second team will give us a better game than most teams, we haven’t done too bad in the last few years, although I agree WHU will be well prepared and tough

If you look back don’t think pep likes to have many games. Prefers to train more which naturally makes us unprepared for the first game of the season but benefits later on. Except the players to be knackered after 60 mins in the community shield like last year and same in the 1st game.
Doesn't matter how many we have we always seem to start slow

No Euros & World Cup so no reason for anyone to be missing 1st 2-3 weeks
Some have comeback fitter by the looks & we will have players chomping at the bit

Nothing better than the real games imo the friendly turn into a farce

Other than the rags every other team players have a mixture of youth and first teamers. I am not worried, last year was an anomaly due to COVID factor and late finish to previous season

The Spurs game last season was as per usual we dominated and should have been out of sight. They scored against run of play and that was it

It takes most teams five or six games to get a rythmn, pre-season games don’t help that either way

Is there anyone here who remembers a preseason friendly against Gillingham in the early 90's ?? I was the Gills club doctor then and for the life of me can find no reference to the game online..starting to believe I dreamed the experience!!!!
