Both of the 'ugly sisters' have coach loads of followers from all around the country often from towns who don't have professional clubs and we don't, they are invariably male between the ages of 30-60 brought up on the success they had, we do have fans however who travel from around the country with stand out branches from places such as Cheltenham and Gloucester, East Midlands etc who have been around since i started going in the late late 70s but outside of the Manchester area it's minimal in comparison to them who are nationwide clubs, Arsenal and Spurs are not nationwide clubs with hordes of fans all over the place but do have support in places like Kent, Suffolk, Sussex etc who travel in to watch them. Our support overseas has obviously grown substantially but in the UK not so much, we've alienated many local supporters and many blues have fallen by the wayside and lapsed blues in the main will not come back, once you are out of the habit it's hard to just get back on the horse so to speak, despite the success the sterile match day experience coupled with disgusting ticket prices and the lack of interest in them by the club chasing day-tripper coin means a large generation of fans of yesteryear have lost the enthusiasm they once had and local newbies just don't attend with regularity for a variety of reasons and it's all down to the powers that be at the club. The difference is that United will still sell out because they have legions of tourists and infrequent attendees who are happy to pay those prices.
They are the flag bearer for the Tourist Clubs.
I genuinely feel sorry for the local match-going United fans I know who are priced out.
City's fanbase is entirely different and we cannot sustain the ticket prices that have come off the back of Haaland signing and the Treble. That demand for tickets has subsided and although it might feel to us like we have hoards of daytrippers who will still come and pay extortionate prices, we only have a fraction compared to United and Liverpool.
It's the club's call. Engage with legacy fans and treat them well, or be happy with thousands of empty seats and a crap atmosphere.
