Prime Aguero or present Haaland

Im not your mate. Since Haaland's first season we've not come close to winning anything where hes played a part in. Aguero every day of the week . Proper footballer.
Not bad for 3 years. Have a word with yourself and have some respect for the great man.

  • Reached 100 goals in 105 games.
  • 2022/23 Season: Won the treble (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup) and broke scoring records.
  • Scored 36 league goals.Broke the Premier League record.
  • Helped win the trophy for the first time.
  • Fastest to 30 Champions League goals.
  • Scored six hat-tricks in one season.
  • Scored 52 goals in all competitions.Club record. Most by a Premier League player in one season.
  • Won second Golden Boot in 2023/24. First to win it in first two seasons.
  • 2024/25 was tougher (Rodri/KDB) but goals kept coming though 34 goals in 48 games.22 PL goals.

BTW I loved Sergio, tough call this, but Sergio only becuise he had longevity and was a part of a fantastic era for the club.

At their respective peaks in a one off game ….. Sergio - he had more variety to his game, more ways to hurt an opponent.

But over the course of a season given the proviso that the team was set up to get the best out of one or the other you’d have to pick Big Erl. The numbers don’t lie.

The Bluemoon pod had a guest on a few months ago who wasn’t a blue but knew her football and she gave an insight into why Erling doesn’t get the respect he deserves from football fans generally. She basically said the bar he set in his first few months was so high that he’s just expected to score every game and so people become immune to the remarkable number of goals he scores as if it’s just commonplace.

That mindset has become noticeable in comments from online blues who maybe watch a little bit too much tv and were taken in by the absurd “too few touches” narrative parroted by upset pundits for a time

I know it's easy to pick on this after a night like this. I know I might sound like a Hindsight Harry. However.....

This isn't really a competition.

Haaland's numbers are incredible. However, we can dissect this into two.

Erling Haalnd is the greatest I have ever seen at losing his marker and getting into the position to score goals, and I mean that. THE greatest.

Unfortunately, once in those positions, he is a million miles from being the best finisher. Greaves, Rush, Fowler, Shearer, etc, etc. He is nowhere near that level. Nowhere near. If he didn't just throw his foot at a football, his positional nous and strength would get him 60 goals a season.

We bought him to turn draws into wins but he doesn't. Moreover, what he does is turns wins into bigger wins.

This is the difference. Sergio was so much more. He was just so more rounded, so much more clinical. Sure he didn't have the strength or the ability to lose the marker the same, but as an all-round footballer and striker, he really was on a different level. Which one would you trust more to score a guilt-edged chance with ten minutes to go to win a game like tonight?

Moreover, Sergio showed in the big games. He influenced them. He won them.

I love Erling. I really do, but Sergio wins this argument all day and every day. He's the best in that position we have ever had.

Part of an actual exiting football team where the team is the star then Sergio, not even close.

For wanking over a graph for goals per game and not being arsed how a 'one man machine' affects play and how teams defend against us you may pick the latest guy, Wonder at the numbers even with scuffed shots and bad headers a plenty.

Sergio for me:-)

All academic at the moment- we don’t create the chances we did when Aguero was around so very difficult to compare. Aguero would struggle for goals in this team.

Did teams play low blocks against City in the prime Aguero years?
Very much so. Going back to the season DSilva and Yaya started controlling games in midfield with Tevez up front in 2010-11, teams started sitting on the edge of their box against us.

Has to be Sergio for me.
He had to change his game for Pep who insisted on him 'defending from the front. Sergio did this and use to work his socks off chasing down defenders. Loved his attitude and his smile.

Haaland is allowed to be static. Oddly Pep has allowed Haaland to be an old style centre forward.
Whilst Haaland goal record is amazing if he isnt scoring the team is more or less playing with 10 men.

Having said this Sergio played in a much better City team, Fernandinho, Yaya, both Silvas, Kompany, Eddy, Ballotelli, Rodri, Sterling, Sane, KDB, in form Foden etc. They had workrate and fight about them.

Sadly at the present I can't think of any that would make it into City of old. Obviously Rodri still gets in ! .

I like Haaland but I loved Sergio his aggression, his work rate all in all a real team striker.

Cheers.

I used to watch Arsenal at the Emirates in the later Wenger years where we competed for the 4th place trophy. At that time City were in their ascendancy, Pep was a couple of years into the role. Watching City live I remember thinking Aguero was a hell of a player. His movement off the ball in particular - something you can't really gauge on TV but you see properly live. He and Silva showed a lot of intelligence.

Haaland is a real handful and his physicality creates chances. Aguero was a 'better' footballer. The only answer would have been to have both in the team!

If I could choose one of the 2 for my team and the way we play I think I'd go with Haaland though. I just think with the balls in it would be mayhem. Like I said, I think Aguero was the better footballer but Haaland creates chances just by being Haaland.

Aguero all day. Yes Haaland's figures are higher, but what Sergio brought to this team was immeasurable. For me Haaland is a lazy sulking sod, who is only effective in the box and still misses loads. Aguero was a threat from anywhere 40 yards out. Could Haaland ever have scored either of those goals against Liverpool, be it the narrow angle one from near the corner flag or even the one against them in the 2-1 victory in 18/19? And could he have kept his head to win us the league v QPR? Not a chance.

In short, Aguero helped create something here, whilst Haaland is here to financially milk it.

My nostalgia will never die in terms of that first title winning team. Aguero all day.

I think it goes hand in hand with the fact that back then you felt more valued to be a supporter than you do now? Genuinely felt the players and club had a rapport with the fans which I don't see now.

And I miss my blue tin with the City badges etc inside when I renewed my season ticket.

150 goals in 173 games is impressive stats. But in a game to game as regards effort and desire it would be Aguero for me.
Haaland looks lazy and uninterested for large parts of games.
Frustrating to see that.
