Priti Vacant has a plan, a deal with migrants plan.

Maybe train them up to be fruit pickers or lorry drivers? Would probably help the economy a bit more than banging them up for four years.
We don't need immigrants to come here and be fruit pickers or lorry drivers... we've still got more than enough of our own unemployed and underemployed tax credit kings and queens who are more than happy to do the bare minimum (i.e 16 hours per week) and picking up their ''in work'' bennies.

So you support abolishing tax credits and making companies offer a fair wage?

Democracy sucks, doesn’t it?!

However, the really good thing is that if revulsion is the widespread response, then everything will be great and the cynical nature of the policy will have backfired, as your fellow citizens use their voice to denounce the repulsive plan.

Right?
The problem is this won't be met with widespread revulsion even though it should.
That's where we are atm with the general public being spoon-fed the idea that there are millions sneaking into the country and making it the mess it is.

But you haven’t thought that through though. Whilst it’s a lovely “idea”, in reality it means that you won’t have a job as there are 1,000 people that would do your job for 1/3rd of your wage because you, like I, were lucky enough to not be born into a war torn country with 70% unemployment.
I would be on a beach in Kerela.

If this is true, then put them to work building affordable homes and schools.
Problem meet solution.
But what if they don’t want to do that? What if the widow has fled with her eight children from her war torn country because the male provider was killed? Is it fair to ask her to give up raising her right children to be a brickie?

What POLICY should be in place to provide the “permission to migrate” (to use OP language), and what can you do to enforce it?

Or, do you simply open the border to all citizens of earth and stop being hypocritical, as one poster noted?
As you are deliberately pushing for an answer most people really dont have the answer for, as its a hugely complex issue...what would you suggest between those 2 extreme examples you are asking about?

Its OK to be disgusted by this (supposed) proposal and not have the perfect solution to hand... as im assuming everyone on here is not a senior government official (i hope)

yes, alongside forcing people to work a bit more than the obligatory 16 hours a week.

I know plenty of people who have the opportunity to work more hours but they choose not too because they'd be hardly any better off due to the ridiculously generous tc/uc system currently in place

“Citizens of earth”! Love it! :-)

Did those 5.5M Brits walk off the train/boat/plane and say, “Love it! I’m staying!” or did they have to jump through a few hoops in the legal system of the country in which they decided they were suddenly going to live?

As one of those 5.5M, I can tell you a fair few hoops I had to jump through, but I digress.

What should the UK do?
You appear to think open borders and changing the name of the country to “England of Earth” would be preferable to a legal process of asylum or legal migration. Do I have that correct?
I have no idea what those 5.5m people had to do because each is an individual case and each person would have their own story to tell and their own reasons for moving. Funnily enough, that is exactly the same as every individual arriving on these shores, which is exactly why we should treat each case on its merits.
