Problem with 'new' fans

definition of a glory hunter...anyway I'm new to the forum here, simply because Dzeko joined and I want to know about how are things going and what's happening within the club and how fans react to him, hence I'll support and cheer for City in every match they play except when they play Everton...that is something I?m proud of...don't hate me but...I've lived across the local team stadium, could watch every match from my balcony, but ever since I started watching EPL (at the end of 1999) I was pulled in by Everton...so there will be people like me who join here to see how are things going but not really be fans of the club...there will be those who as the quoted post says decide to, all of a sudden, become city fans, and there will be those come and remain city fans...no one can decide who is real and who's not...so don't really see the reason to discuss this...

Different issue, mate. I'm totally fine with fans of other clubs taking an interest and joining in. Brings a lot to the forum.

It's the "we" are City "we" think this and "we" think that, even though "I've" actually only been here 5 minutes mentality that I struggle with

I have struggled with this for some time about new fan's, I welcome them all, anyone who supports our club from any part of the globe. Understands our history, respects our traditions and embraces our values as a working class fan base with a blind loyalty to the football club.
"The we are city lah lah been here 5 minutes lah lah" quotes and opinions and postings also make me struggle to agree with.
Its defined my misgivings.
So
After 40 odd years watching this club "Welcome" to new fans but show some respect. You are not the voice or opinion of the match going fan base, we are a Mancunian cult football club despite the media over hype.

could sumone tell me wat a plastic fan is ?????

A fan who never actually goes to a match. Think it comes from the Sky Card.

I have probably been to the Swamp more times than most Plastic Rags I work with. The ones who actually go are bricking it because of their midfield.
cheers for your answer as i have not been supporting city for that long and come for outside manchester been west yorkshire i wud hate to think that a fellow city supporter wud class me as plastic i go to the home games and try to get tickets for away matches which is hard as they sell like hot cakes . i"v always followed england but after watching city play and reading books about the past it made my eyes open to wat football can offer sumone ;-) wud have luved to been at maine rd must have been awesome gutted i never made there

Well said rogdogblue

Just go to the games that is the definition of a Blue "To know us is to love us "

i'm a brummie city fan and have been for over forty years. travelled to hundreds of games all over the country on my todd as none of my mates were blues all throughout my teens, 20s and 30s (when it was dangerous!) although less often since having my own kids, who are now 3 young blues themselves and go to matches with me.

try telling me i'm not entitled or in some way second rate and i'll dig you out. faystey man.

When I had to suffer the ignominy of visiting Maccklesfield for a competitive league game or watching us lose to Lincoln, no one told me it was possible to change teams and go and support someone else.

I was born a City fan, I will die a City fan. No matter what happens in between.

So anyone who chooses to be a City fan, whatever their reason, can fuck right off as far as i'm concerned. I don't want you anywhere near my club.
I chose to be a City fan when I was 5,my Dad wasn't into footy(cycling nut),so my uncle took me to the match, you can't believe the impact it had on me.And another thing, don't you realise a lot of Manchester was fuckin decimated in the late 60's early 70's,with the slum clearances and people moving to new areas,I was born in Ardwick,Manchester 12,when our slum was due for knockdown,we had 3 choices,Hattersley,Reddish,or Moston...no choice really...and another thing ...Man City have always been the club of the common man, when I was a kid in the 60's,met Joe Mercer,Big Mal,never met Matt Busby(great city player). So my summary is he more the merrier...oh and by the way my Grandad,my great Grandad,my Great-Great-Grandad,all worked down Bradford Pit, where the stadium is now,so when I go to the match I always think of my family who worked and lost their lives where we support our team..uncle john aged 32 grandad john aged 56.

Nail on Head.

The 'traditional' fans like me feel as though we've lost something. We had good days but we also had shit days 10 times more and i think i can't get it into my head that we are challenging to be the best team in the world with the money we have got.

I keep expecting it to run out and accept our place with the sheffield wednesday's of the world. Some of the paranoia, which i admit to suffering from too probably stems from that. Yet i still go to games thinking "We'll fuck this up" and when we do i laugh and accept it unlike the people who turn up expecting us to win 7-0 every week. Which could explain the resentement i feel with "Plastics" even though i should be happy there are more blues in the world.

I agree. I grew up in a family who weren't into footie (or any other sport for that matter) but I liked it but never really found a club to support till later. I came to live in Manchester in the mid 80's and started coming to watch the games at Maine Road. Gradually I became hooked. I particularly loved the Derby games, when ever Liverpool came over (great atmosphere) and best of all any FA cup game. It seemed City would either win 5:0 or lose by the same score not much in between! I recall a series of games against Huddlesfield Town in the 87/88 season which are a good example. In the league (2nd division) City thrashed Huddlesfield Town 10:1 but then later the same season in the FA Cup it took 2 replays to beat them! I moved to London for work later and now live abroad but have supported City ever since. I would like it if we can still welcome as many committed supporters as possible.

Interesting, I've watched City for many years, and have seen all of the shocking sides, been to all of the shocking grounds, yet I don't hold the same paranoid mentality. I agree, new fans who have been here for 5 minutes are welcome, but they should show some fucking respect to those who have been much longer, seen much more, and understand the culture and tradition of the club in more detail. I'm all for the kids taking our support forward, but this whole, 'we know it all' is fucking ridiculous.

Back to the paranoid point. I know there are many fellow blues like this. I've been guilty on here of having a pop at them from time to time. Just want to state, not all city fans who have been watching them over the years suffer from this same condition. I expect us to win games (not 7-0), but that's not because I've been here for 5 minutes.

ive lived in manchester for about 10 years, past 3 in reddish, but brought up in wales. up until the age of about 10 i supported Everton for the only reason my brother supported liverpool. most people in school supported man u or liverpool then later arsenal and chelsea, (every kid had a premiership team they followed). however everybody also supported cardiff city (when i used to regularly go to ninian park in the early 90's we were in the old 3rd division),cardiff also have a history but i can't remember anyone doubting anyone elses support for not having a knowledge of something that happend when i wasn't involved. it would be hard to imagine back then cardiff being in top flight football, (i can vaguely remember there being no crowd due to not being able to pay the police) so no conflict of interest.

my wife is a manc and her family are very much reds and not happy that I have and now my 2 boys are following city. the reason for this being it is the closer club and have always hated united. i would say most of the new supporters are like me, do my kids have to have know the history or the previous dissapointment, do they fuck they just enjoy football.

football has changed, and obviously so has the club, times change get used to it or fuck off.

I agree 100%, great post. The problem is there are some who have spent so much time criticising Man U for this, that it's difficult to backtrack now and embrace it without making fools of themselves!

I will now once again be called a rag for stating this, it's this very attitude the makes a mockery of our good support though some are too blind to see it![/quote]

Thats it in a nutshell really, its come home to roost.
