Just recently someone close to me has been diagnosed with prostate cancer in his 50s. He has had yearly checks but this time it was discovered. They think it is very recent as it is small. He has had the scan which showed it has not spread to his bones so has decided, along with his consultants advice, to have the prostate removed. Just wondered what other lads on here think about that, as I'm sure anyone who has gone through this has read up extensively on the different options. He has private health care but I am told with cancer this is usually not an option, but can it become an option regarding which consultant does the op.

Hi pal I’ll try and be brief not being rude just going out for a walk, I had my prostate removed at the time after meeting Surgeons and Christie’s both on the same day we went for the surgical route . There’s no one size fits all in this it depends on if you have children or still want children etc and your health. Both are complicated with major side effects, As I say
we opted for surgery and unfortunately wasn’t successful it wasn’t eradicated so ended up with radiotherapy treatment what we could of chosen in the start, Also theres bean therapy with hormone treatment , which can run along with radiotherapy, as for the private side of treatment I’m not sure where your friend lives but I will say in my opinion us blokes are absolutely blessed if we live anywhere near stepping hill or Christie’s the treatment I have received is second to none , we are so lucky ( hopefully you lads won’t need it) .

No problem, hope you enjoyed your walk. No one size fits all, I'm sure your right. At this stage he has to take the consultants advice. Doesn't want more children that's for sure, but needs to get it out, if its still a small growth and less than a year old, seeing as it has not spread. Here's hoping, thanks for thr reply.

Coincidentally, I’ve had my Prostate cancer confirmed tonight - Gleason Score of 8.

Nothing much changes - it’s what I expected. I’m already taking the hormone tablets, which will change to hormone injections every three months, and then I’ll be getting some radiotherapy in 3 to 4 months.

Thanks again for all the good luck messages, and best wishes to others having to go through this and in some cases, make tough decisions.

Had a first meeting with my oncologist yesterday: I will get a single session of brachytherapy (general anaesthetic, rods up the bum, high-dose radiation, overnight stay, catheter remaining in until the morning) and then two weeks later, I will get 3 weeks of external beam radiotherapy.

I have my first hormone injection on Thursday, and this will continue every 3 months for 2 years.

The interesting twist is that as I'm a private patient, I have been offered the chance to take a drug called Abiraterone.
This is normally given to men when other treatments have failed but my oncologist explained that the biggest risk for people like me is not the prostate cancer they are treating but the chance of other cancer cells developing. Abiraterone - offered on the NHS in Scotland and Wales but not England and Northern Ireland - has shown success in stopping any other cancer developing so unless I read anything bad in the next few days, I'll be agreeing to that.

I think 2.9 is just below the danger limit, isn't it? Anyway, good that you are on active surveillance as that will enable action as soon as it's needed.

Yes, I’m not quite sure where it would become a concern, I’ve seen figures between 3 & 5 and it seems to be a bit age dependent. It has been between 2 & 3 for two years now. I take the view that until I’m told otherwise things are under control. So I can relax for 4 months until the next test unless something dramatic changes meantime.

Just wondering if anyone can give advice. I been living with incurable prostate cancer near on four years. Six months ago my PSA was 0.3, in January it had gone up to 1.8 and last weeks blood test was 2.9. I know its still below four which is good but its obviously heading in the wrong direction. Anyone had the same happen to them and what was the outcome?

I don’t expect you to read back the thread but I’ve posted about my best mate who was diagnosed in Feb 2015 with incurable Prostate Cancer, it had spread to his pelvis so removing the gland wasn’t an option.

He’s still here 9 years later after having hormone and radiotherapy treatment.

I really couldn’t tell you what his PSA’s readings are as he’s very private about his situation but as a friend of 54 years I’d absolutely know if anything was heading in the wrong direction. He’s in good health, strong as an ox and hitting a golf ball further than he’s ever done since we took up the game 34 years ago!

Keep going, there’s plenty of encouragement and treatment out there.
