Prostate cancer

I was out today for yomp over the tops with a few of the lads Glossop over to hayfield via rowarth six miles nothing to difficult and was brought up we’ve raised £8,500 for prostate cancer uk in our fundraising walks over last couple of years so we’ve decided to do one more in the spring to get to £10,000 so we’ll be doing the walk in the spring I’ll post details near the time but it’d be great to put some faces to user names if anyone fancies this , if you’re not up for the walk then come and have drink in the afternoon, as I say I’ll post the route details nearer the time , more than likely do the snake summit (pass over exposed) over bleaklow down into old Glossop
I’ll have that Gary send me the details when it’s finalised HNY

I might have a bit of that pal. How far is the yomp? I'm not bothered about distance because I walk 10 miles a day, just curious.

What pissed me off was I went for a full blood tests as part of an over 65 mot as advised by my GP but had to ask and then qualify why I would also want a psa. Remember I had my psa thru peer pressure due to extraordinary number of friends having been diagnosed. At no point was a psa test ever muted by my GP
That's pretty shocking that someone of your age had to justify why you'd want a PSA test. As I understand it, anyone over 50 can ask for it and as the risk increases the older we get then someone over 65 shouldn't have to explain why they'd want one. They should be offering it to people of that age every couple of years at least.

As it happens, I'm 54 and asked for one before Christmas because for the past couple of months or so I've been peeing 2, 3, or 4 times during the night most nights. Had the rectal examination on December 20th and the GP said my prostate didn't feel enlarged but recommended doing a urine test and a blood test. It's only since then that I've discovered that an enlarged prostate isn't actually a sign of prostate cancer and there was me thinking I was in the clear when he said it wasn't enlarged! Anyway, dropped my urine sample off on 23rd December and had my bloods taken on the 30th. On the 31st - just a day after my bloods were taken - I got a text off the GP saying they'd had the results back and want to discuss them with me so I should make an appointment within the next two weeks. That text landed about half an hour before I went out on New Year's Eve ffs! So I'm booked in for an appointment on Friday afternoon. I've no idea if they've found something and I'm surprised if they got my blood test results back just a day after they were taken so it could be that the text I got is linked to the urine sample I gave a week earlier. Of course, by the time I see them on Friday they will definitely have had the bloods back as well.

Good luck irrespective of everything you’ve quoted best just take everything one step at a time and as hard as it may seem don’t think too far or hard on it there are so many permutations many outweighing the outcome you are probably fearing.

Thanks mate. Yeah, it could be many things other than prostate cancer and some of those things can be worse or better so I'm keeping an open mind until I find out more.

Well that was a surprise went to clinic in stalybridge this morning to have a 12monthly check on my sugar levels. Nurse offered to do all my other test then very encouraged that she suggested I had a Psa I explained that my regular check was due soon but she said I might aswell have it done now. So now awaiting results next week just hoping I don’t have a repeat of last years experience

Best of luck for your Friday appointment M18.

So I went for my appointment with the GP on Friday afternoon. As I suspected, further investigation is needed. PSA count was 4.6 and the guideline for my age is 3.5. He said it wasn't alarmingly high but high enough to warrant looking into so he's put me on the Cancer Pathway which means I should get a hospital appointment within 2 weeks. I might need a biopsy but he did say they can sometimes tell from a scan. He did say that the frequent visits to the toilet during the night could simply be a case of caffeine being in my system, and that I shouldn't be drinking anything with caffeine in it after 2pm in the afternoon. I often have a cup of tea an hour or so before I go to bed so I'll be cutting that out and drinking herbal/decaffeinated tea in future.

4.6 isn't too high but it's sensible to get it checked out.

For reference mine was 23 when I was diagnosed last year, but all the doctors that I spoke to said that PSA wasn't the most useful indicator of Prostate Cancer (I'd argue that it was in my case!).

Maybe they can rule out cancer with a scan but the only way to definitively diagnose that something is cancer is with a biopsy.

Anyway, in your case there are lots of things that it could be, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it at the moment. Just take it one step at a time.

Not surprised, they can do them all at once so the cost of a dedicated psa check is saved.

Bit late to the party here Gary but I'll see if I can get a few of the Ashton GC members up for that one. Our good friend Mick Fozzy is captain of Ashton this year and PC is his charity of choice, he's very close to Barney, they've been mates since school. I reckon, depending on the date we could get a good few of us up there and help your cause, cheers.

That’d be superb Hammo mate I’ll chose a date as soon as the fixtures have been confirmed for March/april pal.

Cheers Gary, got some interest off the lads including Captain Fozzy, I'll see what we can do about a bit of sponsorship from the members. I'll see if the pro will put a football card on at a fiver a go, that should raise a good few quid on its own. Well probably come back to
Stalybridge afterwards for a ruby, make it a full day.

Sorry you have to go through this blue. I hope your treatment goes well and you have a speedy recovery. Take care and remain positive.
