Punk and New Wave thread.

Just found this on YouTube. Old Grey Whistle Test. Worth a watch if you like The Damned.

For Fucks Sake that is absolutely shit. They're putting themselves up as musicians, aren't they. yet have no musical talent at all.

How the fuck did punk rock fool so many people. Then again, people think McDonalds is food fit for humans

May be shit to you but The Damned are a very underrated punk band and original from 76 and still playing nowadays. First UK punk band to release a single (New Rose) and and album (Damned Damned Damned) before Malcolm McLaren manufactured the Sex Pistols hit the scene after the infamous and contrived Bill Grundy rant by Rotten and co.

Punk rock fooled no one but the press. Maybe you believed the hype of punks spitting on and beating up grannies in The Scum and The Fail ?

Punk bands inspired many other bands to form and evolve new genres from punk.

This track is over 44 years old and arguably the best punk track ever. Still sounds great, to me at least: )

About 5 years ago my girlfriend dragged me to see them in Leamington. I'd never particularly rated them but they were fantastic. A lot of these bands were better musicians than they pretended to be.

So the first ever UK punk single is also the best ever?
Guess it was all down hill from the begining then?

Your girlfriend has good taste pal. the Damned have been fantastic over 44 years and I first saw them.at The Apollo in 80. Best gig I saw them was at the Metro in the mid 80s, a smallish former cinema in Ashton, they were brilliant musically and Dave Vanian has a much better singer than the average gruff voiced sounding punk front man.

I said arguably as New Rose is always high up on any punk critics list. I didn't actually say it's my fave punk single but it's always been there or there abouts to me. Downhill? Well maybe, maybe not. For me yes, I always liked the early stuff 76-80 best, then it went downhill I think. I have a mate who got me into punk in 78 and he loves all the modern punk and is a promoter of new bands. He very rarely goes to see old skool bands because he's seen most of them and knows several band members personally. It's all about opinion, and that goes for any musical genre.

Punk saved music , it was disappearing up its own arse, even ELP Yes and Genesis started doing shorter songs.
It's also a myth that punk destroyed musicality Anyone who was any good in the 80s was inspired by it.
If you look on the Damned website you'll see they even describe themselves as punk and progressive. Capt Sensible is a brilliant musician.
I'd go for Neat Neat Neat as possibly the best punk single by the way!

I agree pal, and Neat Neat Neat is also a cracking track I was and am still fond of Right up there with New Rose and any other punk track.

Also the Damned were good mates with Motorhead as they were both under Chiswick Records in the same recording studio. They performed at least one track together and I think I recall watching Lemmy in interview saying The Damned were his favourite band.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you Neat Neat Neat.
