Question Time

Have any of the anti-immigration parties ever suggested who will do the work that Brits won't do if immigration is severely restricted?
They talk as if immigrants only come in to do unskilled work.

This is far from the truth. We need the skills of many immigrants because (among other things) the government and private employers can't be arsed to train people. It costs too much. So taxes will need to rise to pay for it and it will have to be phased in as it takes years to train some roles.

There's a reason the Tory government let in so many, and it's largely due to the needs of the economy. Proof? Well, it was scarcely a political bonus for them, was it?

Similarly, if you want to get Jeff from Kirkby to harvest stuff you're going to have to pay for a) his transport to the work site and b) the cost of his lodgings. Because his family up in Kirkby still needs to pay their rent and other living costs, and so his wages have to pay for that. He can't afford both. BTW there's a good chance Jeff will be shit at harvesting (as it's a skill he does not possess) so his work may not be economic anyway.

As I've said before, in this country we will the ends, but not the means.
