It's more than what you (and I for that matter) think he's worth, but we don't know what City think he's worth, and that's the crucial factor. We will NOT be paying more than we think he's worth though.
It matters hugely for reasons I've explained in previous posts. 5m overspent here is 5m unavailable elsewhere, which could be another transfer, or 10 more jobs in the marketing department).

We go into a negotiation knowing our limits (whatever they may be). If we come out having broken our own limits, we shouldn't be in business.

Do we not just say to Liverpool then this is our max take it or leave it? Why not come out and declare this is what we have done so our name isn't being shit on in the media? We think he is worth x amount this is what we will pay over to you Liverpool. If they accept great if not we move on to other targets when its not too late. After all this we end up paying what Liverpool want where has it got us?

One other thing to consider is it's not only the fee of 50m it's his wages which I'm sure will be £150k plus a week and agents fee

It's funny how insignificant some people seem to think a mere £5m is.

Exactly, imagine having £5 million..... It's also almost a full years wage for a player on 100k a week which I assume the club would rather it be spent on, possibly even being Sterlings wage.

We've already saved a good couple of hundred thousand by not paying Sterling to be on his holidays.

Well, I suppose some of it as a dance isn't it? we go in low, they say no (which we virtually expect with a first offer), and we inch slowly towards our max. If we go in with our max to start with, we miss out on a chance of a cheaper deal, and they'll always assume we've got more to spare anyway.

At some point though, it really is going to be our max, and that's that. It feels like we're approaching that now (whatever the figure is).

Really is dragging this deal, whilst over at scum they seem to have bagged Schweinsteiger in a day. If I were City I'd give them a deadline on this deal, then look elsewhere.

If we pull out of the deal, can you imagine the shit that would be thrown at us? We'll be accused of ruining the head of England's finest talent.
I don't see where all the hatred comes from. We've made a bid for another club's player. It's happened before. We don't want to to pay the full asking price. That's happened before too.
