Tell me who Chelsea have signed.
They don't need major investment this summer.
They did last summer.
By this point last summer they had signed fabregas and Costa.

I'm not saying I agree with the original poster, but your point isn't really that relevant.

We don't like being called a Sugar Daddy club, and expect to be taken seriously.
To do that, the balance sheet matters.
If we're going to be a credible (but huge) football club, we have to practice what we've been preaching, and that's running the club as a genuine business, not running to the Sheik every time we need a few more million.
And FFP's not gone away (yet). We can't spend as much as we want. We can spend a lot, but it's not limitless. 5m spend on Sterling could be 5m we can't spend on Pogba. So which do you choose then?
Amortised over a 5 year contract, it's one million a year.

I don't think it would make the difference.

sad indictment if we end up having put all our eggs in this seriously over priced basket

The club have decided for their own reasons to haggle over the 5m.

I suppose if you have faith in our people knowing what they're doing with all of other deals, you would believe this is part of that?

Equally though, you could argue that walking away from this deal shows that we can be frightened away from top targets. Wolfsburg and Juventus have no great desire to sell, so would be encouraged if Liverpool can rebuff our advances. Two sides to every coin.

Not exactly the same scenarios, but Real and Barca met the requested fees when it came to Bale and Suarez. They didn't feel that meeting the asking price made them look a soft touch. They just got the deals done.
According to Barca they paid around £10m less than Liverpools asking price. Wouldnt believe either club (Barca or Liverpool) to be honest, but going back to Barca and Madrid, both clubs put innincredible groundwork to get their signings in. Sometimes taking over a year. So I'm not sure it's just a matter of them running in, paying up and walking away with the player.

I've thought that about the Sterling fee all along. I've thought we're being asked to pay £25m for the player and then £25m for his homegorwn tag...until yesterday when we seem to have got Delph for £8m.

Delph's last two seasons were both better than the season Sterling had last season.

Other than Bolton away, Chelsea away and City at home every time I watched Sterling he was bloody awful last season!

Wouldn't say awful, but wasn't playing anywhere near his previous seasons best.
But that season he had Sturridge and Suarez to help him. At City he will have many more
class players to play alongside.
