Rangers thread | 2025/26

Rangers have dodged a bullet with Gerrard in my view. The first time he was there, it was step 1 of his long term strategy to get the Liverpool job, jumping ship to Villa was step 2. Unfortunately for him, he was totally found out at Villa, and the Anfield job was no longer a realistic prospect, so he took the easy Saudi cash, where he then failed again. If he had gone back to Ibrox now, how motivated would he really have been, starting over at step 1? Personally I think Danny Rohl would be a much better appointment, as indeed he would have been when Martin was inexplicably given the job in the summer.

What Rangers fans want as far as I can tell is to, if not win everything domestically then at the very least be serious challengers for every trophy going in Scotland every season. And European expectations, at least as far as the Europa league level is concerned have been raised by how well we've done in the last 4 or 5 years. There's been a last 16, qtr final and final appearance in the last 3 Europa campaigns with the only outlier being that disastrous champions League group phase, so naturally fans expect to at least be playing knockout football at Europa league level. That's if we can't qualify for the champions League.

So those are the expectations as I believe them to be. So a manager there has to have some kind of presence of that of a "proven winner, leader" type figure. That's why so many fans have such a big problem with a young guy coming in who's biggest achievement to date is keeping Sheff Wednesday in the championship against the odds. Fans have undoubtedly been left scarred by the Russell Martin debacle and there's understandable fear about bouncing from one 'project' to another. Rohl may well go on to do really well as a manager but with a job like this he will pretty much have to win every game from day 1 to get fans onside with him. And with this squad in the state it's in that's no guarantee. I'm not doubting his skillset as such because I know zero about him, only what Wednesday fans have said. But he will be up against it from day 1 so we will see very quickly if he has the character to stand up to what he will be up against.

Ur ye raging?

Tough 1 to take for me MP, not because I think Gerrard is this great manager that guarantees success, but more because of the alternatives and I know a lot of that fanbase were all in on him, so any other guy already is tainted in their eyes, which already means he's facing an uphill struggle.

Gerrard like Rodgers is only waiting around for a chance of managing in the PL.............why either of them clubs go for these arseholes is beyond me

Both our clubs are in a sea of self inflicted shit Gunner. I should be laughing my bollocks off, I had a laugh obviously, but in the end, we are still fucked and that brings you down again.

I think if under the new manager, a bad pass abd hes on a hiding to nothing. I coukd say they can't fuck up again. We have failed 8 times in a row to qualify against teams a third of our size. So that's not true. 8 fucking times in a row.

Latest from BBC Sport:
It seems Graham Potter, Gary O'Neil and Michael Carrick - who had all been linked with the job - are not among the candidates.
A quick announcement is unlikely.

I love McCoist but had to laugh at him yesterday. Stating how Rangers need a man who knows the club and gets the club. Can we pinpoint when this kind of logic started? I find it mad so often when a managerial position is spoken of this kind of line gets trotted out. This off the back of just sacking a manger who played for a club and not giving the full time gig to a former player last season. They wanted Gerrard back because of his job there last time where he done well which ironically he had no links to Rangers before that.

I am not too fussed or have a preference in Scotland, but they need a good Celtic and Rangers, hope they get back to their pomp.

He didn't say that man needed to be the manager, more someone within the coaching or board setup who has been there and done it at the club and knows what the standard is or at least should be. He referenced David Weir as someone who would suit the sporting director role in the club. That's what he was getting at. He didn't talk specifically about the manager in that sense.

But again, there is always a nonsense of somebody "getting" the club or such like, Jordan has hit the nail on the head (again) about that not being the best decision for the club.

Well look, if you're basing it off pure, dispassionate logic then obviously the best man for any position at a football club is obviously the best, most qualified man for the job. Best in class etc. And if Rangers hadn't brought in guys who are failing miserably in their roles and not showing themselves to be the best people for the club (Thelwell, Stewart, Purdy in Rangers case) then the chat around bringing in guys who get the club would be a lot quieter.

But that is it isn't it. Just the best guy for the job. He didn't have to visit ibrox on a school trip when he was a kid to be considered. I hope they appoint the right person, for the right reasons and they get back on track.

Regardless he walked away with a league title which is more than enough to say someone done well at least.

So if you don't win a treble you haven't done a good job? He is a bell end, I don't like him. But to say he didn't do well after winning a title then that shows the bias. United shot themselves in the foot 2012, Mancini deserves credit for us winning that title though, not because United threw it away.
