The best way to defend is by having the ball . Something that was a disaster last season . Another defender super gifted on the ball is a lot better for the team than a 1 v 1 defender.
Although there is an element of truth in this , a lot of our defense is ball retention, however even the best team in the world does not retain the ball all the time and we look weak when we don't have good defenders.Walker was not the best player on the ball however he was an excellent defender at his best and we were rarely attacked down the right side when he was at his best.

Options at left back - assuming we were looking at Prem based players - were probably Kerkez (Liverpool bound), Robinson (soon to be 28) or Ait-Nouri (age 23).

As an attacking player he will really help us - especially when teams throw 10/11 behind the ball a la Palace at Wembley. Hes far better than what we have and Pep alongside playing in a better team would give him further scope to improve. He makes the pitch bigger, offers an overlapping option than we dont have with Gvardiol there and is very comfy on the ball in both halves of the field. Assuming the fee is around the £30m-£35m area its a positive move, and a guy who adds to the squad imho.
I swear I must be watching a different Robinson to everyone else, he's fucking shite

He’s in advanced talks with Liverpool. It’s not possible
That's part of my point. He's obviously available so why are we getting beaten to the best option by the dippers? Part of the recruitment is to convince targets we are the best option, we've got the best manager on the planet as an added appeal too.

Don’t care about the price personally - but to justify it…

- 23 years old

- Years of PL experience already

- Brilliant footballer

- A key area of the squad

- 2 years (1 plus Wolves additional 1 year option) left on his deal

- Important to Wolves, price should reflect that

Age but experienced coupled with his fantastic ability, I’d argue £50m is a very very good deal.

Buzzing with this one. He and Gvardiol on the left hand side of the defence, they could play head tennis down the line! Two technical unicorns.

Seemingly in the minority here as someone who really doesn’t rate this guy at all. Don’t think he’s anywhere near the level we aspire to be. Would be a very underwhelming signing in my opinion especially at the prices being floated. Hopefully proves me wrong if we do end up signing him.
I would say there is definitely some concerns about a potential signing of Air-Nouri, but there is also a lot of upside.
There are some questions marks about his ability to play in a back 4 without being a liability in defense but if Pep can manage to get him good enough defensively we could have another threat in attack. It's far from certain he would be an instant hit in my opinion but I would say he is one of few LBs in PL worth to punt on considering price/age/availability/upside.

I can definitely see why we are signing him but based on the 20+ times I've seen him play (and not YouTube highlights or stats comparisons with players playing in a more defensive role) he would have to improve his defensive awareness and decision making or he will be targeted by opponents. But considering he is still 23 there is every chance he will when being coached by the best manager in the world.

Seems like they’ve had him boxed off almost since he arrived at Bournemouth

He is above average defensively. The best defensively last season were Diogo Dalot, Udogie and Tyrick Mitchell. High rates of tackles and low rates of getting beat. Outside of those 3, Rayan ranks comfortably better than everyone else defensively.

Personally, I just don't think fullbacks in general are special defensively. I just don't remember many Doku and Savio couldn't dice on a regular if they didn't get immediate help.
Considering you have Diogo Dalot who is useless as "the best defensively" I would say that there is some obvious flaws to the metrics you are using to determine if someone is good defensively.

Genuine question, have you seen his stats?

He’s great on the ball, but he’s chronically slow! Just like all of our defence.

Bad move defensively, will definitely make us better on the ball, but again really weak on those transition we can’t stop.
