RB Leipzig (A) | Post Match Thread

Hard to argue that on the balance of play a draw wasn't a fair result. However, with my City hat firmly on, if we score their equaliser it (quite rightly) gets chalked off for 'climbing' and, at the other end, if that hits one of our defenders it's (again quite rightly) a nailed on penalty.
I dont think he did climb on Dias. If he had I would say it’s a foul.

I think Gvardiol got right up in the air with an impressive leap before he even touched Dias and then just used Dias for balance once he was up and Dias screamed and threw himself over.

It was just good dominant play from Gvardiol (the only time I was impressed with him all game as I went into that game with big expectations but thought he was rubbish other than that header).

Has anyone read peps post match comments. He has said he doesn’t think we have the pace to play in transition with speed and play forward quickly. He named haaland and walker as the only ones with real pace. Ignore the fact that you may disagree and name foden etc as others. But, he obviously doesn’t feel we can play any way except from this. We obviously need new players this summer to put some life into this team.
People have said this for ages when we didn't replace the pacey players. Not sure why he didn't mention Alvarez

It's weird but when Foden first started playing I didn't have half as much confidence as the rest of BlueMoon. I guess seeing him score and succeed against some European and PL powerhouses changed my mind on him and I know those performances are still inside him. If he was 30-some year old I might think he's lost a step but he's too young to just lose his ability and explosiveness.

I guess my reasoning for thinking Alvarez would have been a difference maker is that while a player can go into a slump his speed doesn't. I felt the same way about Navas when he was with City, he shouldn't have been a starter but he'd have been a great sub to some on to protect a lead. The last thing RBL wanted to see was a serious breakaway threat come on when they were in full-on attack mode. Just the threat of him and Foden might have been enough to slow them down a bit.

Fair enough mate on both points.

One thing for sure is that we need Foden back on form of the last couple of seasons, he's unplayable at his consistent best. As you say he's young enough so he's not lost a step anywhere, perhaps a bit of a reality check for him I'm not sure but we're a far better team with a fit and firing Foden. Another point with Foden is that I'd hope Pep isn't deliberately trying to change his game to be more like Grealish. Whilst Grealish does what he does well we need that different option on the left and Foden isn't suited to safe possession football but more so he's got a good delivery into the box and makes great runs in behind - obviously it's all up to Pep but just speaking as a fan I hope he leaves Foden to do his thing.

Jeez came to have a look at people's opinions on this thread and can't believe how negative they are. Yes we weren't great 2nd half but Leipzig are a quality team and we're always going to have their moments. Yeah it's also frustrating not feeding Haarland enough, but under Pep it always takes a while for players to adapt, this time the team needs to adapt to him. We also had a blatent pen not given. Ffs that was a decent result. Stop moaning.

I think Pep was incredibly concerned by their threat on the counter so was unwilling to change the lineup or system as we'd controlled that side of things pretty well. Their goal was a really poor one to concede. Pep seemed happy with a draw and we have three weeks to keep gelling and nail this system to win the game. I'd rather he recognised the opposition's threat than stick with something that was seeing us sliced open. In Europe, he is almost always scarred from a previous campaign. The way we conceded so easily against Real despite our dominance will probably see us be much more defensive and a little more lacking in attack as a result. Win the CL drawing one game and winning the other 1-0 then happy days, no one cares how you win it in the end.

I don't mind us being hard to beat. A lot of teams that have won the CL have hardly been swashbuckling trailblazers. The old mantra was about keeping it tight away and being formidable at home. We've achieved the first part.
I can understand frustrations, but ultimately we went there, took the sting out of the match and crowd for 45 minutes, got an "away goal" (I know they don't count anymore, but still super important over the course of a home/away tie), and then forced them to come on to us. Not sure it was amazing game management, but you really do have to manage the match and the tie.

I think the problem lies with our front three more than midfield.
Grealish assists and goals stats say it all. Never gives the ball away but creates nothing.
Mahrez blows hot and cold. Neither he or Grealish get the ball across to EH, both always cut back in on their preferred foot. They never mix it up and swap wings mid game.
It’s all been said about Haaland , but as a trio they don’t gel.
Something has to change.
I would Foden an extended run on the left.
He worked well with EH early season. He is direct, sees a pass and can score.
Your take on Grealish here is literally made of bollocks.

So you'd take out one of our best and most reliable players since the WC and punish him for great performances by replacing him on the LW with a player who's had attitude problems recently and shown little in his recent performances to deserve what you suggest.

Give me strength.
