Reasonably priced laptop

Is now a good time to buy (August) compared to in a month or two ?

I see ACER, ASUS and Lenovo laptops for my budget on the PC world / Curry's website

And, AMD vs Intel - much difference ?

AMD vs Intel are generally very close now but really it's on a chip by chip basis. You'll need to Google which one has the better performance as otherwise there's no way of knowing if you have a bad Intel vs a good AMD or vice versa etc.

16gb of RAM in an office and general use PC is overkill unless you are doing any kind of rendering or high end game play, if you are using a laptop for just browsing and watching movies then 8gb is more than enough.
Mechanical hard drives versus SSD's? That for me is where your boot times will be faster and by that I mean a LOT faster. Invest in a good speed solid state drive (Samsung Evo brand is cheap now) you'll be booting your OS up to 10 times faster, after killing all the start programs with the "msconfig" command line.
If you are going to buy a new one and you just want a change then make sure it has 8gb of DDR4 ram and an SSD, but if I were you i'd just upgrade your hard drive to SSD.
OK, my laptop is running slow. How do I edit the msconfig command line and how do I know what should be running at start up? This may be obvious to some but I just see a load of processes running when I open task manager.

Type in msconfig in the search function and it should display system configuration, open that up, go to start up and then open the task manager.

In windows 10 it will give you options to disable any start up process, this doesn't remove anything, I disable everything.

EDIT: On windows 10 just search for task manager instead :)

In addition you can cut the boot time from 30 seconds to 5 (It's as low as you can go) here's a screenshot of the menu on task manager.

CrapCleaner has a page to handle all this too. The free option does pester a lot though for updates and upgrades (££).

I'd like a PC so I can get my novel written. I find laptops too uncomfortable to use. Is anyone in the business or know someone who is? I need one within the next two months.

You don't have to put them on your lap, mine stays on a table. It's a self-contained PC that's portable if you need it to be.
