Ref Watch City Games - 2023/24

Wasn’t putting you in any extreme, just wondering what those other ways of manipulating clubs positions might be.

I started making a list of individual items, but it was too long. By far the biggest category was in-match refereeing, of course, but there were others: financial regulations aimed at particular clubs, scheduling and rescheduling of matches, new refereeing guidelines and their application, VAR of course, off-field punishments, points deductions for FFP violations, for example.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying everything happens to City, or any club, all the time, but that is the point. You asked for some ways in which clubs' positions can be manipulated throughout the year. There are many, imo. It's a tap that can be opened and closed as required, should they so wish. Not neccesarily to obtain an absolutely desired result, but to maximise the value of the product.

Not really although Sky were pushing should Pep be punished for talking to Pawson at half time .

Dermot actually said no, he had every right to talk to the 4th official and you can clearly see Pep telling the rest of the bench not to get involved so Pep had done nothing wrong.

Sky quickly changed story after that
That's Dermy's Xmas bonus out of the window then

It's not necessarily the direct effects of the referee/VAR official, but the second and third order effects such as influencing the decision making process of our players/manager or emboldening opposition players.

If one set of players knows full well that any hard & fair challenge is going to be punished as a foul they will think twice. Same the other way round. If an opposition team know they can go in hard with relative impunity our players might consider backing out of a tackle.

That can 100% effect the outcome of a game.

Got you and wouldn’t disagree with some of those. Thing is what they’ve done with them is actually reduce the chances of there being a new winners name on the trophy every six years!
