Ref Watch City Games - 2023/24

What I find baffling is that the linesman flagged off side. No way he could’ve seen it. And a linesman should signal off side if he is absolutely sure. He could never have been. Nit even close. He must’ve been so eager to raise it.
Bobb was not offside end of story Us again innit

It doesn’t show he wasn’t either though and the call on field was offside.

As you suggest, determining the exact point of contact is impossible, so your version is just as valid as the one in the picture.
You are perfectly correct. It has always been impossible to accurately judge when the ball is touched especially if the ball is moving. This is what gives the officials the advantage on judging if the player is offside or not especially on tight calls. In other words they make it up. City offside? Rags etc not.

Exactly. They are specifically instructed not to flag unless 100% certain which he cant have been. Happens with us a lot

The difference when it comes to a similar incident for a cartel club is stark!!

Every clubs’ fans believe referees stitch them up.

They’re told to delay if they’re not sure. In this case there was no time for that.

They give an offside if they think it is. They don’t give it, if they don’t.

There’s no guidelines about only flagging if they’re 100%. That would result in them never giving close ones.

The bigger problem is that the ball will have stayed in contact with Bernardo’s foot for maybe a quarter of a second while he was playing the ball. they are supposed to judge whether Bobb is offside when Bernardo’s foot first makes contact with the ball, which is probably a frame before. Maybe two, because the ball is just about leaving his foot there.

Bobb may have been offside, but this picture does not show that he was

And there you have the problem with all this nonsense about accurate offside calls to the mm. Even with SOAT the players foot will touch the ball a fraction of a second before it moves. There is no 100% accuracy in any of this.

Certainly bloody close

It's another of these ridiculous offside calls where the attacker has done everything humanly possible to stay onside. He is looking in the direction of the defender playing him "onside", but is considered to be offside because his foot is in an advanced position due to his running movement. It's stupid. Maybe all players should have their ankles tied together and should hop around for the sake of some mythical accuracy.

It's also why the benefit of the doubt should go to the attacker.
