Referees receive a minimum salary of £70,000 per year, with the top referees earning at least £200,000. On top of this, they receive at least £1,500 per game in match fees. That's an additional £30,000 per year for refereeing just 20 games. We will never get officials of the standard required in this sport while we have fans and players who treat them as they currently do. The standard and size of talent pool required will just never get involved in officiating. It’s as simple as that.
It’s exactly the same with teachers, same with the Police, same with politicians…
Treat people in tough jobs like shit and you will reduce the talent pool, recruit shit and get shit officiating/teaching/policing/politicking back.
The officials aren’t shit because they get a bit of stick. They’re shit because of the level of shit they get (and that’s anything up to death threats) plus the over-scrutinisation of every single one of their instant decisions (they make fewer mistakes than the players and managers do!) everything is looked at in the studio a dozen times and then all week on things like SSN, from ten angles, zoomed in, slowed down… the refs don’t get to see anything like that, they see it once from one angle at one speed and have to make a decision there and then… this stops people wanting to get involved in refereeing from the outset.
I think fans and pundits are completely deluded when it comes to much of what they moan about with referees.
Although, not so much today, as that ref just didn’t deal with their timewasting. But we get that level of referee because of everything I’ve said.
If it’s so easy to referee a game of football like fans and pundits all seem to think, why aren’t all these fans and pundits top referees? The talent pool is tiny because almost nobody wants to get into refereeing.
I think fans have every right to expect top quality referee performances.
I would happily run the gauntlet of fan abuse every day of the week, for a chance to earn that sort of money. Instead of framing this as what fans deserve, ask yourself whether or not referees deserve £100,000 per year for what they do.
