Ref Watch

Tony Harrington had a great game tonight in the Newcastle v Everton game. He could have probably sent 3 players off but didn't and actually let the game play. I wish more referee's would let the game flow the way that he did tonight.
This might sound as though he is doing the flow of football a favour, but if three should have been sent off then I think the ref is not applying the LotG. If they've done summat that mandates a red then they shouldn't remain on the field. Or were they fouls that other refs might have given a yellow, or where refs wouldn't have bothered raising the whistle to their lips? Just shows how variable football can be arbitrated.

This is why referees are always on to a loser. Enforce the laws strictly and flash cards as the law requires and you’ve ruined the game.

Be a bit more relaxed and let things go and you’ve lost control.

I didn't say 3 players should have been sent off, I said 3 players could have been sent off. The bar is set so low now when issuing soft cards that it spoils the game in my opinion. Bad tackles should be punished but not every foul is a booking.

Funny thing about 'soft' cards - the opposition turning up at The Etihad never seem to get 'em. 'Could, should'? If the ref has a mind to send someone off for a tackle that on another day he wouldn't or in another match, then I wonder how the sent off player would feel seeing a very similar offence only given a yellow. I've said for season after season that the issue of yellow cards often seems like a lottery, and the situation of someone being booked like that Wolves fellah last season for two yellows inside a couple of minutes doesn't bear comparison with someone who is violent or reckless towards an opponent. Red cards shouldn't be given for an accumulation of 'technical' fouls - kicking the ball away, removing yer shirt after scoring a career worldy. But then the refs have their instructions!

Correct, but how many players, teams 'n coaches look at the LotG and see how they can take advantage of them, push them to and beyond the limit. Refs are on a loser which, I suppose, is why they keep the VAR visuals and verbals tightly under control and all the fans get is a yea or nay to a goal that VAR have looked at. The LotG have been, I think deliberately, made more complicated than they need to be in order to circumvent teams taking advantage of a 'loophole' within them, and there are refs, without a doubt, who referee teams and players differently.

Today's was a complete bell end, determined to give us nothing . Stockley Park reluctantly told him to go to the screen for the penalty, yet it still took him endless views, from what was clear cut.

Brighton getting free kicks from the merest touches, too.

Bent all round

Bent in what way?

Awful ref today. Not sure why he didn’t give the penalty when Haaland appeared to be taken out but to then not give one for two fouls on Bernardo was inexplicable. Not sure why no cards were issued then and again when the player the ball down in a fit a temper. The clearest yellow card for dissent you will see all season. Their players seemed to have ear infections given the amount of times they spent falling over. Let’s hope we don’t have him again for a long time.

Well I'd say not giving us clear penalty, before we scored our first. Both commentator and sidekick were baffled that we didn't get one.

Then the farce of not getting a clear penalty for the shove THEN foul on Bernardo, and then having to wait for Stockley Park to reluctantly tell him to go and look.

Gross' late challenge on Rodri went unpunished until someone had a word in the ref's ear.

Just 3 incidents, summing up why we are up against it.

Clear and simple

Pawson is shite. He’s weak and that was epitomised by not giving a stonewall penalty and instead hiding behind VAR giving it. I’ve never seen him have a firm control of a game, it’s like a free for all.

The free kick on Rodri in the second half too. What was it? 5 seconds after it happened that he brought it back?

Also, what took so long for them to review and ultimately give that penalty?!

I simply do not understand how the penalty for the foul on Bernardo wasn't given immediately by VAR. Waiting 3 minutes to call the ref over. Come on. It's a complete joke.
Everyone in the ground knew it was a pen and yes, the ref had 3 or 4 players betweem him and the foul so he was slightly unsighted so he gave the defender the benefit of the doubt, but 3 fucking minutes for goodness sake. 3 fucking minutes! VAR does itself no favours at all.

He could easily have blown to disallow Haaland’s first goal though. There was a similar challenge in the second half and he blew for that one.

The foul on Rodri was absolutely bizarre. It was a clear foul and the ball clearly went to a Brighton player so how can he play the advantage! As for the " foul " on Haaland VAR chose not to show the only angle needed to decide whether there was contact. You decide why.

The worst ref we’ve seen in quite some time. Barely got a decision right. Half the time he was guessing, he didn’t have a clue. I think it was Rodri who got scythed down in the 2nd half and he wasn’t gonna give even a foul until the crowd bowled and he changed his mind and issued a yellow card.

He’s the kind of indecisive **** who costs you big games

He was a lot worse than what I've flushed away this week. Quite dreadful. I thought we had two shouts for a pen before we got the stoner. Why didn't he blow for the foul in the first place 'cos he must have had a decent view, but just how laughable is it to carry on playing for three or four minutes? And do we get the time added on for pissing about until he goes and looks at the pitchside monitor? And what would have happened to the pen had we scored in the time he's ambling about the pitch. There was an other instances where someone tried to take Kev out and slipped but PawsonPatrol still awarded Brighton the kick. It got to one point where I'm saying to my neighbours that he's giving 'em a free kick each time they lose the ball. In terms of quality refereeing that shit show never flickered the needle on the RichterScale.

Thought the Haaland one was more the one VAR should have overturned.
