I think part of it, in all honesty, is very simply the changing demographic in the west. Forty years ago if you looked around you, I guarantee you that, on the Kippax at least, more than half the people standing there were under thirty. Now, if you look around in the East Stand or CB stand, it's the opposite. They're all greyheads (i.e. like you). Putting it bluntly, less testoterone around. I was shouting my usual rubbish at the last match I managed to get to ("Pick your man up, Mangala, ffs!" etc.) and the bloke next to me turned and stared at me for a long moment. I chose to ignore him. But hey, it's a free country, and if people want to sit there as though they're watching tv, there's not much you or I can do about it.
What I think is almost worse than the atmosphere is the way the ground empties out immediately after the final whistle, and sometimes starts emptying out well before. This has been often mentioned. I just don't get it. What are people in such a hurry for? What's going on at home that's so vital? When players come right over to, say, the East Stand, to salute us, after a really terrific performance by the lads, and a stunning game — as happened several times last season — and the stand is already three-quarters empty, I honestly feel a bit ashamed. I almost feel like shouting down to Joe or Merlin, "Yeah, sorry about this. But you were great, lads!" But as I said, it's a free country, and people will do just what they want…
Changing demographic of the west ?. There's still young people the same types of people that used to go. Problem is they can't afford to go. That's why most grounds are full of middle aged men as they can afford it.
