Regrouping of singers within the stadium

Really respect what the 1894 group is doing, and full marks for trying to improve the atmosphere. I think part of it, in all honesty, is very simply the changing demographic in the west. Forty years ago if you looked around you, I guarantee you that, on the Kippax at least, more than half the people standing there were under thirty. Now, if you look around in the East Stand or CB stand, it's the opposite. They're all greyheads (i.e. like you). Putting it bluntly, less testoterone around. I was shouting my usual rubbish at the last match I managed to get to ("Pick your man up, Mangala, ffs!" etc.) and the bloke next to me turned and stared at me for a long moment. I chose to ignore him. But hey, it's a free country, and if people want to sit there as though they're watching tv, there's not much you or I can do about it.
What I think is almost worse than the atmosphere is the way the ground empties out immediately after the final whistle, and sometimes starts emptying out well before. This has been often mentioned. I just don't get it. What are people in such a hurry for? What's going on at home that's so vital? When players come right over to, say, the East Stand, to salute us, after a really terrific performance by the lads, and a stunning game — as happened several times last season — and the stand is already three-quarters empty, I honestly feel a bit ashamed. I almost feel like shouting down to Joe or Merlin, "Yeah, sorry about this. But you were great, lads!" But as I said, it's a free country, and people will do just what they want…

Changing demographic of the west ?. There's still young people the same types of people that used to go. Problem is they can't afford to go. That's why most grounds are full of middle aged men as they can afford it.

The crowds have always been a mixture and when i was a kid on the kippax there was plenty of older blokes as well and even some women, though nothing like the amount who attend matches today. The kippax was standing and if you wanted a laugh,a sing song and at times a fight you went in there. If you wanted a more genteel atmosphere you went in the seats.

All seater stadiums were the death knell for killing the atmosphere, that and not being able to turn up and pay at the gate.If we talked some other mates to come and watch City with us if they could scrape the money together, we jumped on a bus, queued up,paid and went in and we all stood together. You couldn't do that now unless you planned it weeks in advance and even then it would be doubtful you could get seats together.

Not sure if the greyhead comment was aimed at me but i am not grey yet, though the sides are getting there a bit and there is certainly no lack of testoterone i can assure you, lol!

As most people have said previously you can hear our support loud and clear and pretty constant when we play away and that is usually only 2-3 thousand so it shouldn't be that difficult to recreate that at home.

That's true, too. I paid 2sh6d — when there was such currency — to get in through the schoolboys' entrance on the Kippax (there were some bloody big schoolboys queueing, I can tell you). For Sunday's game I have paid £60. By any criterion, that's serious money. A twenty-year-old in a starting job just doesn't have that kind of money, especially when the game's going to be on the telly. Your point doesn't cancel out mine, Cheadle Hulme Blue — it complements it.

This. Really wish you could do a last minute job and just turn up, but football has moved on. The main reason i watch a lot of non league, zero planning required and barely any money.

Not the same as watching City though.

I am pleased the club are trying to do something to increase the atmosphere and i hope it works.I was going to Maine Road since 1968 and even back then i remember people saying the atmosphere wasn't as good as other grounds and comparing the kippax to the kop etcetera.

It has certainly died a death though in the new stadium and it is hard to put a finger on why.Where i am in 119 in the South stand it can be a nightmare. There are a few who try and sing and others who stand in abject silence whatever is happening in the match. They never utter a shout or show any emotion i just don't understand it. I am pretty animated during a match and i often get disapproving stares by the silent majority, especially if they disagree with something i shout,at least i am getting involved and showing some passion!

I just don't get paying good money to go to a football match and remaining silent they may as well stay at home and watch it online or on the tv.
Its a case of each to their own.....have a look around the ground, there's a small pocket of fans in one corner&half the bottom tier in the South stand that makes any noise....if the ones that "remained silent" stayed at home and watch it online or on tv(as you put it) the place would be empty....stop worrying about what everyone else is doing...believe it or not...your in the minority...

Nobody can force anyone to do anything i just don't understand people who just sit or stand in silence, some of them i have to look twice to see if they are still alive. The place wouldn't be empty as people on the waiting list would take their place.

We are discussing the atmosphere or lack of it and how to improve it on this thread, therefore i am mentioning that there are a lot of silent fans in the ground, but i really don't give a shit either way what they do or don't do.I am in the minority on what?
its their business how they watch the match,no one else's,the vast majority of the ground watch the game either in silence or in a way other that singing or creating an 'atmosphere'...your also deluded if you think we have 35,000 on the 'waiting list' ...we've seen it before...'give us our END'...you get your wish and most of them sat down.......

''Sniff.'' I said it was their business how they watch the match, they pay their money they make their choice it was an observation as we were discussing atmosphere or the lack of it.Where did i mention 35,000 on the waiting list?? I said we have plenty of people who would take their place if they stopped going, which we have. We haven't been given an END as the whole ground is ours except for the three thousand in the away end.If you mean a singing end it hasn't happened yet though the South stand is recognised as supposedly being the more vocal end.If you open your eyes you will see the whole end stands all match in there and if not it is because the stewards are making them sit but that doesn't seem to happen now.

35,000 is about what it would take to take their place cos thats about what it is.....35,000 plus sat in silence...then you've got your 'singers' and thats being generous...it really is.....we have been given an END before&it failed spectacularly...eveery fucker sat down in the extra seats we were given, good luck with what your trying to do but not everyone is interested, most probably dont even know what bluemoon is...

Don't wish to rain on your parade, but the South Stand is for Middlesbrough fans next week, so by now I expected 109-110 to have sold out to the displaced singers from the South Stand. Its not a Sunni Shia situation I hope.
Note to Pualchapo, using the "sniff" shows that you are losing the debate.
All the best from one who stood on the popular side at Maine Road before it had a roof and was renamed after a road. Now in a padded seat in 204.

I love the efforts being made to improve atmosphere. Keep it up. One point worth noting though is that we often have rose tinted glasses on when we look back to the past. I won't bore everyone with the issues of the past but I was trawling through some of my research this morning and spotted letters in a match prog from 1976 (in some ways a similar era to today with success and decent crowds). The letters could have appeared today. People were saying how bad the atmosphere was. Words included "lack of support", calling home fans "alleged supporters", feels like "City are the away side", "I felt like a foreigner" meaning he was being frowned upon for singing" and so on. Other comments talked about how poor away support as well which, to be honest, as surprised me.

Anyway, it's important that we keep up efforts to get the atmosphere right and thanks to all of those working hard on this, but worth remembering that not every game from the past was a passionate, noisy affair.
