Respect for Referees

It was the Kolarov yellow card that really did my head in last night, he was clearly the victim of the foul despite the dipper rolling around as if he was dying, utterly mystifying. To an extent I can understand Dowd not seeing the Adam/Dzeko incident in real time, it wasn't that easy to spot.

That's what gets me mate. He can't have seen the Kolarov tackle clearly or he wouldn't have made the decision so why has he issued a yellow card. Suggests he has a predetermined idea of the outcome.

you do all realise that without these referees there would be no game of football??

how do you know for sure that webb/clattenerg saw those incidents?? you dont, you're just guessing from a video that can not possibly be conclusive

But isn't that how the FA review system works?

I'm all for video tech but we need to come up with a system that doesn't make the game "too" stop and start. If you look at the NFL obviously we cant make the game go like this but we need to allow refs to have another look at contentious decisions if they feel unsure. The refs in NFL normally get it 100% correct and interestingly enough no one ever remember who the referee is after because correct decisions and a fair result prevail in the end.

you cant possibly tell from the video that webb was looking at balo's feet!
they asked the ref if he saw it, he said no

I've got sympathies with both sides of the argument here. On the one hand, we have seen some pretty abject refereeing displays this season (not just in City games); on the other, refs are essential to the game and we should "just get on with it". What is clear, referees are well paid pros but they need help with a fast paced modern game. Unless the public make sufficient noise about such inconsistent refereeing, nothing will happen because the media doesn't care whether Man City get the rough end of the wedge.

Really poor decisions from incompetents causing us problems. Players refereed on reputation rather than incident/situation at hand.

"I get knocked down, but I get up again..." but like any boxer, constantly knocked over, the knockout blow or stoppage is never far away.

At a complete loss as to what we can do about any of this. It is there, right in front of everybody's eyes, as plain as the nose on your face, the way refs are behaving.

Yet the only people who care are you and me, brother man.

We inhabit a footballing world of drug cheats, racists, rapists, philanderers, illegal bettors and thugs. Funny how the biggest crime "they" see is Manchester City Football Club finally having the wherewithal to compete with the "big boys".

Well if they are that desperate to go home and take their ball with them, they can keep it.

Cricket Umpires generally have the respect of players and fans alike. That's because they are quite clearly impartial, almost always get decisions correct and have the benefit of a 3rd Umpire to instantly review if necessary.

Rugby Referees also generally have the respect of players and fans alike. That's because they are also quite clearly impartial, almost always get decisions correct, have the benefit of a 4th official to instantly review if necessary, and also have the benefit of being able to rely on the direct intervention of their Touch Judges.

Now then, lets look at the system that prevails within Professional Football and the current crop of PL referees. By common consensus their impartiality is often dubious, the majority get decisions wrong on a regular basis, and although they have the so-called benefit of a 4th official he seems to serve little other purpose than to keep time and check on substitutions. The 'Referee's Assistant' (linesman to most of us) is not allowed to encroach on to the field of play to 'assist' the referee. Furthermore, he/she doesn't usually flag until AFTER the referee has made the decision himself.
Finally, of course, the referee has no access to video technology during a game. His word is law, and anyone who disagrees may in restricted circumstances appeal to the FA, although the outcome of 99% of appeals is inevitably in favour of the referee's decision (which he is allowed to change as he sees fit with the benefit of constant television reviews and media pressure).

Little wonder that the credibility and respect for football officials has dropped to an all time low. Football could learn a lot from Cricket and Rugby, but then again most of us already knew that a long time ago.

Is the studs up over the ball challenge by Henderson on Kolarov being shown on a loop by Sky Sports? Have they analysed it all day on Talkshite? Will the FA retrospectively ban him for three games as arguably it should have been a red?
And whilst we are at it will the HSE visit Klanfield and withdraw their health and safety licence after that shambles last night?

To add to this I know a bloke who employed Dowd as a salesman and he confirmed today that Dowd is ...yes you guessed it...a rag.

What was that song? Things that make you go hmmmm...

The in phrase now is "real-time"last weeks was "retrospect"next weeks will be ?what ever the twats that have an agenda against us fits.
Had to laugh at todays news that Talksports cricket correspondent Jack Bannister is actually at home in Wales watching the England v Pakistan test match & not in the UAE........does that mean the South American correspondent Tim Vickery is really in South London?
