Rewriting history

If you want to read the original versions why can't you just buy second hand copies or download them online?

First Dahl and now Fleming, really getting stupid now, its history it’s of it’s time, what next rewrite the bible? I watched Rocky last night and tbh I’d never noticed before Creed gets called a jig! It’s set in the 70s that’s how people talked and things should be learned from this not scrubbed because that means people won’t know what things were like in the past and how things were wrong.
At the start of " Enter the Dragon" ,when the 2 racist white cops are hassling Williams (Jim Kelly) as he is trying to get to the martial arts tournament, they say that "this jig ain't going nowhere".
And nobody has seen fit to alter the dialogue as it's part of the script/film.

When I was teaching (40 + years) I always used primary historical sources. Many were provocative and contained words or images that are nowadays objected to by folk worried that someone will be upset by them. In the last year of my career I was asked by the headmaster to edit out some of these items. "Tactfully", he said. The year-long objections started with the use of the word "kaffir" in a speech by Gandhi about his time in South Africa and ended with the prominent appearance of a swastika in materials on the rise of Hitler.
The head and I eventually agreed that it would be my last year of my career.

Along with the attention seeking cranks, busy cunts with nowt better to do,and general do gooder types.....society also has a huge mental health problem.

I'm not sure how to fix my last point.....but a good start would be to stop tolerating such fucking nonsense.

Try reading Huckleberry Finn as I did last week. The n-word is on practically every page. Now, in all honesty, that reflects how people thought and talked at the time. (US Southern States, pre-Civil War.) But I can understand how many people might be offended.

People are not, by and large, sufficiently educated to understand that times change and that words that were once acceptable are no longer so.
Hit the nail on the head. You dont educate people by dumbing it down or by hiding unpleasant phrases. Letting it remain and talking about it, is a far stronger way to educate people about injustices of the past and prevent it from happening again in the future.

In a similar vein, a lot of current historical drama pretends that women and non-whites were always as equal as they are in 2023. Not only is this false history, but it insults the memory of those who sacrificed and bled to achieve equality. It is well-intentioned, but a bad path to go down.
