He does look a little chunky compared to his lean powerful look a couple of seasons ago.
If he really wants to challenge for a place, then it's in his hands. Come on Micah, we love you here, get your game face on ( and trim down ).
 
Ha where do I start well i'm sorry to upset the faithful and probably already discussed but Richards has deteriorated beyond repair
He wouldn't even get in the Droylsden first team and that is saying something the way they defended last year
I only hope some fool buys him from us if we are lucky........please!!
such a shame but he's had one good season and a bit(unbreakable) and not progressed .......god knows what the city coaches think of him....he maybe a nice lad but that's not going to get him a first team place......why let a talented youngster like Nastasić go ......keep him get rid of "The bulk"
 
Has anyone ever considered that Richard's 'bulk' may be natural? It's an absolute nonsense to suggest his physique is a result of him pumping iron like some muscle crazed sted-head.

Many players in the past have been bulky and not suffered from persistent injury as opposed to many skinny player (Woodgate) who have suffered from persistent injuries. Being a keen sportsman myself, I know that eating the correct diet, and training using natural momentum ie press ups, sit ups, sprints, distance running, cycling will all burn fat and build muscle mass naturally and don't require hours of iron pumping to get big.

Richards problems stem from his inability to concentrate and read the game and a seeming lack of stamina (which could be a result of a continued lack of match fitness). As a case in point; During the Community Shield, Kolorov lost the ball near the Arsenal area and it pained me to see him wheezing his stiff body back up to our penalty area at practically walking pace. Does anyone blame his lack of stamina on his muscular build (or lack of)?

Some are built as speed machines (Bolt), whilst others are built for endurance (Farrah), so in terms of what they excel at, its all in the genes. Looking at some of the steroid munching meatheads rolling around Manchester, Richards looks anorexic in comparison. Do you honestly think if he was bulking up on purpose which was affecting his performances that the club wouldn't have done something about it by now?

Bulk isn't Richards' problem, its his application to his football and a sense that he thinks he's better than he is. Richards isn't a naturally gifted footballer like Silva, Kompany etc, I see him more like Milner who is a good solid pro who works hard at his craft and concentrates whilst he plays. Richards trys to rely on a natural ability that he doesn't possess, he needs to be told to concntrate and think when he plays as Mancini always alluded to with him and not to lose the natural muscle mass he was born with.
 
You say you re a keen sportsman well you should know that Richards muscle bound frame is akin to a gym monster and the city tv. Vids back that up as Lescott and Kompany both mentioned themselves and Richards as the gym iron beasts in the past. If I was him I would be staying away from any form of heavy weights and trying to trim down to how he was a few years back. Cutting may seem dangerous in prolonged spurts but many athletes do it to gain an advantage (fighters, American footballers and rugby backs) and a footballers career isn't that long. If Richards was a boxer he would have had his fight purse confiscated on numerous occasions. Great guy in person but maybe to much too soon as he is way out of shape. All his training should focus on his weak areas stamina, technique, cutting down bulk etc and its amazing that with our quality of PTs at the club they haven't managed to find the right way for him yet.

Heavy weights are my exact point. If this is what he's doing it's unnecessary unless he's planning to compete in weightlifting or strongman competitions and surely the club would have flagged this up as a problem.

The point I was making is that I've seen sportmen who are bulky but only eat salads and never use anything heavier than 10-20kg's in 5 sets of 20 repetitions to increase their stamina and cardiovascular efficiency during intensive circuit training. Those sets can be split over arm curls, bench presses, leg presses, standing presses etc all concentrated on speed, time taken to complete and with no breaks in between each discipline.

Used in conjunction with shuttle runs, squat thrusts, sit ups press ups, pull ups, burpee's as part of intensive condition training regime, this should only build muscle and burn fat naturally. Any bulk that incurs is down to mother nature and your genes which isn't a bad thing as long as its your body naturally responding to its conditioning.

Back to the football, as Mancini said to Micah on many ocassions when he first wanted to leave - 'You'll stay right where you are and learn to concentrate'. He went on to tell him that he had the potential to become one of the best right backs in the world but only if he used his head when he played. For me that is the main problem where Richards is concerned.
 
We've seen Richards over many years now - it is quite clear his bulk isn't down to nature. He has stacked up over the past few years. Probably hit the gym with Lescott - who was actually strong and didn't compromise his stature by lifting too much. Richards isn't built for football, he is built for the gym. I remember Shane Warne talking about Chris Tremlett when they played for Hampshire and he asked him what he was getting big for... told him to get big for cricket, don't do it just to do it. Tremlett followed his advice and really stepped up his pace bowling.

Now I know that is a different sport but the same applies. If you get barged off the ball then you get stronger. If you slow down as a result you have to address that. It's power to weight ratio and all that. Kompany doesn't get outmuscled but he doesn't look anywhere near the size of Micah.
 
Everyone should know by now to take message board rumours with a pinch of salt... but someone at the main Sunderland forum said Micah is at the Academy of Light today. Have no idea if he's an ITK. :-)

peoples disrespect to a player who has given us good service from such a young age is astounding. If you are not rags then you are certainly acting like them.

Micah is still a good right back and could easily do a good job for someone in the premiership.
