Rico Lewis | Set to sign a new 5-year contract (pg33)

In my honest opinion
I’m seeing a trend. The club seems to be rewarding attitudes and mentality. When you look at Bernardo, he’s not the WC player he used to be. The stats don’t lie he’s been on the decline for quite some time now but as Pep said whether he’s tired or played out of position he always does his best and gives everything for the team.

Now for Rico who still only 20 and tasted first team football. He may not be the strongest, fastest or the biggest but he leaves it all out on the pitch. His statement opposite of what Savio and Alvarez believed. He wants to stay and fight and understands that no amount of mins are guaranteed. I commend him. He could turn into a really outstanding player. His already technical. All he needs is to find the thing that makes him special to the team. Could be output or his passing, could be anything.

He was on ting wages. So that’s another player that’s getting a bigger contract on top of Dias and Rodri.

If I had to comment on my concerns:
The timing is abit too early for my taste. Considering how bad everyone was last season I don’t think anyone should be rewarded with a shiny new contract. I think the season should be played out first and contracts be earned, unless you’re Rodri. Gives players a reason to fight harder imo. A player really locks in when they’re playing for a contract.

As things stand, the are still areas of Rico’s game I’m not the biggest fan of, and I’m not sure if he’ll ever be in our starting 11. I see him as a good role player. If he’s okay with that then so am I.

Does this extension block our pursuit of a Walker replacement ? I hope not. We have Nunes x Rico who both aren’t strong defensively. I’m in the opinion that either is a great backup but not the biggest fan of both. Especially if an actual RB is available for the no1 spot.

Either way. Good for him. I hope he has a great season and proves everyone wrong.

A shining example of the value a good agent to a player.

He'd have been a big “sell” for me, yet here is for another 5 years.

Oh well, got to be someone else we can move on.
He must be a bloody good agent to have pulled the wool over Pep's, Hugo's, rest of the coaching staff and of course the board itself. Or, they just think he's worth it.

Happy enough that Rico is staying. The club still needs a Walker replacement. Maybe not possible and we will go with Rico and nunes. The laters role is under pressure now.

Someone has to leave…
Rico was already better than Walmer his last 2 seasons. We dont need a Walker replacement. We hadn't had prime Walker for 3 years. And we won the league in 2 of those 3. We'll be just fine.

Nothing against him i just don't think he's good enough to be s starter in any of the top 4 teams, as a squad player maybe he's worth keeping around, he's no right back and he's behind so many in midfield so if he starts 10 league games i'd be suprised.
He is and has always been a right back.

He's a big asset as long as we are dictating and controlling games and struggles when under heavy pressure. Pep has most likely learnt from this and will play him accordingly.
I always find it interesting when folks point out he struggles in games in which everyone struggles.

Is this how folks analyze Gvardiol, Gundo, Kev, Phil, Haaland John, Ruben, Bernardo or Kyle?

Did i miss how those guys excelled when we were under heavy pressure or off our game?

Did Gvardiol not give up multiple goals under pressure? did Phil not suck and give up a goal when we werent on top? Was Kev not a mess in the games we couldn't control? Did Dias not struggle with Mbappe's pace in a game when we were shit?

So what are people really saying when pointing out the obvious. That our players struggle when we are not on top? ALL OF THEM!

Constantly bringing it up as if its unique to Rico is weird to me.

I judge him exactly how i judge others. How is
he when we are purring? He is fantastic! And that's all i can say.

Good news. As we saw on Saturday, he’s more than capable as an inverted right back against most teams in the league.

Very happy he’s staying, excellent squad player.

My question is this, if Rico is staying and Savinho is staying but Pep wants to work with a smaller squad, who’s going ?
Akanji, Gundo and Kova are the prime candidates.

I think we will end up with a squad of 24/25 players:

3 Goalies - James, Bettinelli, (either Eddie or Ortega goes)
7 Defenders, John, Khus, Dias, Josko, Ake, Ait Nouri, Rico
(
Reis and Wilson Esbrand - loaned, Akanji sold)
13 midfielders, Cherki, Reijnders, Bernie, Gundo, Oreilly, Gonzales, Oscar, Savinho, Doku, Rodders, Phil, Kova, Nunes
(Jack, Echeverri, Naypan, Phillips loaned, McAtee sold)
2 Forwards, Erling and Marmoush

Thats 7 home grown which leaves us with 18 foreign players Khus and Savinho qualify for our B list so from a pure sticking to the rules we shouldnt have a problem. Then its how Pep manages those numbers and keeps them sweet.

Personally, I think that gives us the strength in depth we need whilst we have a core of John/Josko/A-N/Rodri/Reijnders/Haaland for the most important games whilst fit and the others rotate/play cup ties/lesser PL games.

Sorted.

Nice, I'd never sell Lewis. He might never be good enough to be a starter but he'll always be a great backup (which you always need). Also, he's English which counts for a homegrown quota. I wish we kept McAtee as well for the same reasons but thankfully we have a buy-back option in case he turns into next Palmer xd

I would have thought wed maybe wait to make this decision until after this season since he'd be down to 2 years left at that point but good for him. He's backed himself and is a hardcore blue so let's hope this works out well for everyone.

It would make sense if they changed his number with this new deal though. Get him down into the 30s at least!

Khus and Savinho don't qualify for the B list. You have to be club trained for 3 seasons between 15 & 21 I believe.

I still think Gundo will go.

A City fan, a young lad, a product of our academy, a versatile option that can cover a number of positions, seemingly a great attitude, a lad who we would have to spend £50m+ to replace with no guarantee of it being an upgrade, and someone who understands and WANTS to fight for a place in the side, has just signed on for another five years.

Can someone please explain why this news isn’t being universally celebrated, as in 100% of City fans over the moon?

Give me this over a shiny new toy costing tens of millions, every single day of the week, and twice on match day.
