riddles?!

You have three one-hour fuses (the kind on TNT). Unfortunately, they don't necessarily burn at a uniform rate; all you know is that each one takes exactly one hour to burn completely. You need to make a fuse which is 45 minutes long.

How do you do this?

Could you just set light to the fuse and put it out after exactly 15 mins?

Well, no! That would be a bit easy wouldn't it?

Did I mention you haven't any form of time piece?

If you have something to measure it, you can.

You know you want it to be 3/4 of its original length. So measure it, work out what a 1/4 of it is, then measure that out and cut it off.

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Yes, it can be done.

They don't burn at a uniform rate ie; the last quarter may burn away in 59 minutes whereas the first 3/4 may take 1 minute.

Burn them all for 15 minutes. Put out the one that has lost a quarter?

a)You don't have a timepiece.
b)Who says one of them will show a quarter?

I'm not sure I understand this, this is what I've got from this:

I have three fuses of different length that all take an hour to the end.

I need to make a fuse that lasts for 45 minutes.

?

EDIT : I'm so fucking dumb.

Light Fuse 1 at both ends, Light fuse 2 at one end.

When fuse 1 has died, you know 30 minutes have gone. Light the fuse two at both ends now and light 3. When fuse 2 goes out, it takes 15 minutes. Put out Fuse 3, which you now is a 45 minute fuse.

I made that much harder than it had to be :P
