Rishi Sunak

The only slight fly in the ointment is that Sunak is the one who gets to unilaterally decide. He can be pressured by his party, but it would feel like an empty threat unless they're insane enough to depose yet another leader immediately prior to an election or lay down a VONC which wouldn't help his election chances either. He holds the cards and all the rest of the Tories can really do is hope he agrees with them.
Yet another example of our unspeakably shit electoral system.

will be sooner than that

Can’t argue with Phil’s logic, however I think by the end of March Sunak’s election strategy will have defaulted to desperately hoping for a miracle over the summer when the polls don’t shift after the NI cut and the early March budget. If that miracle doesn’t happen it’s either wipeout in May or total wipeout in December following a summer of Tories endlessly repeating their greatest hits of mentioning Corbyn, vaccines and getting Brexit done over the summer whilst the horror stories of mortgage rises and pay cuts for millions keep coming.
