Riyad Mahrez - 2018/2019 performances

Still keeps the ball for too long. Got a cracking left foot but Sane and Sterling show how he should be playing. More direct, more pace and less time throwing stepovers. A good game for him still and a goal and an assist. Much more to come from him I am sure. Exciting times.
Mahrez doesn't have the pace of Sterling or Sane; he succeeds with good (but not freakish) pace, excellent dribbling, and on-target finishing.

Sterling is playing out-of-his-mind this year and is ahead of Mahrez for first choice left winger; but Mahrez is no slouch either - he's class on the wing - but his strong points and thus his game is different than Sterling's.

Sterling is faster; and has upped his dribbling. Due to pace and dribbling skills Sterling is more likely to beat his marker one-on-one.

Mahrez is the better finisher though.

Mahrez is a great addition to our side, but behind Sterling on the wing due to Sterling's massive improvement.

I find him frustrating. One minute he is giving the ball awy too easily, the next a pin point cross that leads to a goal. He does give us something different to both Stirling and Sane which is good to see. hopefully his performances will become more consistent for 90 minutes.

He may well improve but I doubt he'll ever be that consistent as such over 90 minutes,he wasn't whenever I watched him for Leicester anyway. He's very gifted and will always contribute plenty of goals and assists. He's already proving to be a very good signing. Personally I still think we are or have the capability to be at our best when it's Sterling and Sane wide but that's not a dig at Mahrez.

I think it very much has to do with his left foot being world class
and his right foot being very average.

Left foot: great cross to Sané, great finish for 0-2, pinpoint pass to Jesus on the break, very confident and easy.

Right foot: has nothing to go behind his man outside, nearly always going back or inside. Fucked up the counter just before half time, bad ball control.

His team mates are playing the pass to his strong left foot.
That's why Mahrez is not rushing forward as he wants to receive the ball a bit shorter on his left.
That's what we make out as "slowing the game".

When he gets into positions for his left foot, he is dangerous.
Other than that, he isn't. Defenders know that.

I think it's too late in his career to significantly improve his right foot skills.
But he still can be a weapon and is adding to our overall quality.

Though he was excellent in the second half, lot more to come I think as he is still getting to grips playing at City. First half he kept on coming inside rather than taking his opponent on the outside. That cross for Leroy was sublime though.

That’s how I see it, Mahrez as Bernardo was last season are excellent in their own right but as a team Sterling & Sané wide make us special.

On another thread, there’s the fact we’ve dropped 18 points in the league since the start of last season. At least 12 of them were played with either inverted wingers or 352 as far as I can see.

Wolves & Liverpool 4 points this season.
Rags & Liverpool last season. 6 points.
Burnley, Palace & Everton 6 points.
All with inverted wingers, 352 or false 9.

Only Huddersfield home, when everyone was pissed have we dropped points with Sané & Sterling wide with Aguero or Jesus as striker since the start of last season.

Wish he would have trusted his right foot to pass to sane on the counter, thats where raz would have been better but he does wonderous things with his left foot so that makes up for it mostly

If Mahrez adds a little more pace on the right wing, he would be out of this world.
