I was really unimpressed when we signed him because I thought we had a greater need for better players in other positions, and after the Liverpool penalty I was struggling to see how he'd ever really make an impact. His performances had been up and down at best and the goals he scored against Cardiff and Oxford didn't strike me as any indication that he could be anything more than a stat padder. But then he did miss that penalty at Anfield and it seemed to awaken something within him? His performances have been of a consistently solid level for a good few games now (since the Burnley home match, actually, which he topped off with a super goal) and last night he really displayed his value. We were all over Watford in the first half last night but it was shaping up to be "one of those nights" where we couldn't unpick the lock with our usual system. We were getting in behind but the Watford defenders seemed to have every angle covered in front of their goalmouth. Enter Mahrez, who'd been trying that in-swinger to the far post from the first minute and had almost picked out Silva thirty seconds before he found Sané who chested it in. It's something you don't necessarily miss when he's not there, but it turns out he's the kind of attacking player we've been missing. De Bruyne's our master gamebreaker who can turn games round in the blink of an eye with powerful brilliance, but Mahrez takes a more precise, detailed approach to find his target. I talked about unpicking the lock just there - De Bruyne's the type of player who can blast the lock to pieces to get what he wants, Mahrez unravels a paper clip and tries to find the sweet spot that springs it open. Both players have something beautifully destructive about the way they think when they're in the final third and it makes them both ridiculously efficient. Mahrez really is a wonderful option to have and I'm glad he's finally showing signs of the player he was at Leicester - he's contributed to 13 goals in 22 appearances, and since the Liverpool game his percentages are even better. Long may it continue.
