Riyad Mahrez - 2018/2019 performances

To try and give a balanced view, I feel that at his age Mahrez shouldn’t have to go through a Learning Curve. Signing players like Mahrez should be about ‘plug-and-play’. He isn’t that. The very top players come into the squad and hit the ground running. I think that people at City saw something in him that they liked and assumed he would fit in, hence the long term pursuit.

As a fan, when I watched Leicester games in their title winning year I didn’t see him as any more than a one trick pony: step over then cross the ball, whether the player was 30 or 3 yards away. He’s never played like a Pep player or City player since he’s arrived.

If you think of other players in Europe, they generally play to a set format. They’re very technical, disciplined and look to produce an end product from those first two points. Mahrez doesn’t fit the above description and I have no idea what his plan with the ball is. He looks like a 2018 version of Peter Beagrie: you have an expectation of what you want him to do, but it never happens.

He is not a Top player. He hasn’t delivered or made a difference in the big games where we need our top players to make an impact i.e. Liverpool, United. At the top level, he isn’t good enough.

Another point in this debate is if he’s in the squad or team, who isn’t? We pay £60m for an average player and completely ignore our youth. The one thing that I’ll always respect United for is their blueprint to teach youth players the philosophy of the club and bring them through. It hasn’t stopped them from winning trophies. As we all know that blueprint plan has worked extremely well over there.

Put simply, I don’t think Mahrez fits in and I can imagine a year or so from now that we’ll see him transferred to a different league. I don’t like to say this, but he’s quickly becoming the Elephant in the room and is becoming another Navas.
Leicester played on the counter attack nothing like city face, as someone said similar to bernardo ,however just because bernardo looks the part now doesn't mean mahrez will ,

Do you concede that Pep plays a different style than Leicester? Of course for the naive he should land running, but in the real world he has to settle in with many changes to absorb and adapt to. I trust when he does get you to eat humble pie, you will be the first on here to acknowledge
Absolutely. City play differently to Leicester.

No doubt he’ll play against Palace and score or set one up. He’s not at the standard to do that in the Champions league or against the top Premier league teams. If he’s only going to play well against the middling teams, then we should be blooding youngsters instead.

Mahrez hasn’t shown against the elite that he’s been a wise investment. Looking at the Cup game the other night (and some of the regulars didn’t play well) Mahrez had a relatively uneventful game.

I don’t believe this is about systems, this is about quality.

He hasn't got the pace for one on one's. He can get by a full back with a trick but can't burn them or kick with his right so ends up cutting back, slowing it down. Sometimes, instead of paying it back to walker he will attempt a ridiculous pass across the middle, I've seen him try these at the half way line where he's been very lucky not to give it away and concede a goal.

A big drop off from Sterling to him.

Those who are saying he needs to get used to Peps style. That's bollocks frankly. He gets more one v one's with the fullback here than he ever got at Leicester. He isn't delivering. His first instinct is to beat his man, not look for a pass and go. He doesn't have the pace to do damage, or the right foot to get to the by line, which is where we get a decent amount of goals from

The point with Silva was always you could see he was a great player but not a right winger and we missed Sterling out there. Bernardo has become the player it was fairly obvious he would become since.

Wonder whether Pep agrees with you and is sitting there regretting his purchase ?

I respect your opinion and in the long term, it may prove to be right, but I think you are being far too premature in writing this guy off so soon into his term with us

Amazing how they won the league with such a one trick pony.

I've not been exactly elated with his performances but to call Mahrez an average player is just baffling.
